Use Legislative Watch to keep up to date on bills

Legislative Watch is a tool available by subscription that contains the Progress of Bills content, which is updated daily so you always have the latest information.

Progress of Bills content

The Progress of Bills content contains the following:
  • Progress of Bills documents –  a summary of the bill, a list of all statutes affected by the bill, the status of the bill, and links to the full text of the bill.
  • Legislation documents – links to all pending legislation affecting an Act.
  • Alert Services – services that notify you of new activity in the progress of a bill (including in-force status of sections) so you can monitor an Act and get notified of changes to all bills that may affect it.

Access Legislative Watch

  1. Sign in to Westlaw Canada.
  2. Go to
    Finding Tools
    and select
    Legislative Watch
    .
  3. Go to
    Progress of Bills
    for the list of available bills.
    tip
    The Progress of Bills content is organized by jurisdiction.

Search Legislative Watch

You can search Legislative Watch to find the bill you need.
  1. Go to the search bar, enter your search words, then select
    Search
    .
  2. Browse your list of results to find the bill you're looking for.
  3. Filter your list by selecting options in the
    Narrow
    column.
  4. Select a title from the list to open the Progress of Bills document.

Progress of Bills document

  1. Do a search or select a jurisdiction from the Legislative Watch main page and then select a bill to open the Progress of Bills document.
    tip
    Bills are listed alphabetically for each jurisdiction.
  2. Go to
    Bill Tracker Alert Service
    on the toolbar to set up an alert service to be notified of any changes to the bill.
  3. The full citation of the bill and the session of parliament is listed at the top of the document before the title.
  4. Go to
    Commons
    to access the stages of the bill. Select one of the links to go to that version of the bill on the government site.
  5. Go to
    Statutes Affected
    for a list of all statutes affected by the bill. Select one of the links to get the full text of the statute.
    tip
    The link takes you to the first section of the Act but you can select
    Browse All
    to get the full Act.
  6. Go to
    Summary
    to get the summary that is pulled from the introduction of the bill in the legislature.
    note
    Thomson Reuters creates a summary for bills that don't have one.
  7. Go to
    Currency
    to view how current the information in the bill is.
important
  • For Federal Bills, if the bill was introduced in the House of Commons, the Senate version of the reading isn't available. Conversely, if the bill was introduced in the Senate, the House of Commons reading isn't available.
  • Once a bill has gone through all readings, received Royal Assent, and all sections of the bill are fully in force, it will be removed from Legislative Watch. If a bill is terminated, a note about the termination is added to the bill. The bill will be removed from Legislative Watch 37 days later.

Legislation document

  1. To open a legislation document, go to the
    Statutes Affected
    section in the Progress of Bills document and select a statute.
  2. Go to
    Statute Monitor Alert Service
    on the toolbar to set up an alert service to be notified of any changes to the Act.
  3. Select
    Pending Legislation for this Act
    to get a list of bills related to the Act that are live matters.

    Only Acts that have pending legislation will have this link.
