Error: return created in Personal Tax stuck in Submissions folder of the Online Filing Manager
Scenario
After you tried to submit a tax return through the Online Filing Manager you find it has become stuck in the Submissions folder.
Cause
Tax return submissions can become stuck in the Submitted folder if the HMRC server has not sent a response to the Online Filing Manager. This could happen if there's a temporary problem with HMRC's server, or when the server is busy.
Solution
- Checking HMRC’s Service Availability and Service Issues web pages to makes sure that HMRC are not currently experiencing a problem with their servers or that they have not taken them offline for routine maintenance:
- Go toTools, thenOnline Filing Manager.
- Select the submitted folder, thenCheck All/Check Status of Online Filing Submissions.noteThis should move your client into either theAcceptedorRejectedfolder
- If the client's return remains in the Submitted folder, retry steps 1 and 2 periodically for 2 days.
- If after 2 days the client's return is still in the Submitted folder, we recommend that you contact HMRC to determine whether they received the tax return and, if so, have they accepted or rejected it.
- If you submitted the return and you have theManually Change Submission Statuspermission, take the following steps:
- Go toTools, thenOnline Filing Manager.
- Select theSubmittedfolder.
- Right-click on the submission and selectChange Submission Status.
- Select eitherChange status to AcceptedorChange status to Rejected.
- Enter a reason why you need to change the submission status.
- If you did not submit the return and you have theManually Change Submission Statuspermission, take the following steps:
- Go to WindowsStartbutton.
- Select theDigitafolder, thenOnline Filing Manager.
- Sign in with your credentials for Personal, Business and Trust Tax.noteThe external Online Filing Manager may hold details of submissions made in both Personal, Business and Trust Tax, and Corporation Tax. If you sign in with credentials that are not for Personal, Business and Trust Tax (for example, ‘Administrator’), then when you highlight the folders, you will not see any details.
- Select theSubmittedfolder in the folder tree for Digita Personal, Business and Trust Tax.
- Right-click on the relevant submission and selectChange Submission Status.
- Select eitherChange status to AcceptedorChange status to Rejectedas necessary
- Enter a reason why you need to change the submission status.
