Create or Integrate a Sole Trade for use in Personal Tax
Stage 1: create the records in Practice Management
In Practice Management you need a record for the Person, who is your client, and a separate record for their Sole Trade business.
- Create the Person client record first.
- Create the 'Sole trade' recordnoteYou can create the Sole trade as a Contact record or a Client record. It depends on:
- who you consider to be the client/billable entity: the person and/or their business
- how you need to sort and filter records in Practice Management
- if you use the tracker functionality.
- Select the ellipsis button, then the Person from the list who will be the Proprietor.noteThis will link the two records together
- Enter theTrading Start Date.

blankStage 2: share the Sole Trade with Personal Tax
- Open Personal, Business and Trust Tax.
- Share the client if it's not already shared.noteIf you don't know how to share a client, follow the steps in our help topic: Share a Personal Tax client with Practice Management.
- Open the Person record in Personal, Business and Trust Tax.
- SelectEdit, thenSchedule Editor.
- Double-click the Sole Trade.
- SelectNew.
- Choose whether you want to set up the Sole Trader as a Business Tax Business or as a Sole Trade.noteIf you're not certain which entity type to choose, find out more in our help topic: Differences between Business Tax Business and Sole Trade in Personal Tax topic.
- Select the Sole Trade.
Stage 3: set up the Sole Trade in Accounts Production
- If you have Accounts Production Advanced:
- Open Accounts Production Advanced
- SelectFile, thenNew.
- Select the Sole Trade template you require.noteThis will bring up a list of the 'Sole Trade' contacts you have in Practice Management.
- Select the appropriate entity, then selectOK.
- Enter the first accounting period dates and an Entity code.
- If you have Accounts Production (version 5.9):
- Open Accounts Production.
- SelectFile, thenNew.
- Select the Sole Trade template your require.
- Select the appropriate entity, then selectOK.
Your sole trade should now be setup correctly and you will be able to import your sole trade accounts into
Personal Tax
