Use Fast Draft templates to draft documents

Find out how to use the Fast Draft web application to benefit from automated drafting of selected standard documents and clauses from Practical Law.

Not all Practical Law standard documents and clauses are also templates in Fast Draft. Check for the Fast Draft icon in Practical Law or open Fast Draft and view

  1. Select
    Tools
    , then
    Fast Draft
    .
    note
    There are 2 other ways you can open Fast Draft:
    • Select
      Profile and sign out
      , then
      My Fast Draft
      .
    • Open a document or clause that has a Fast Draft icon, then select
      Start drafting
      .
    The Fast Draft web application opens at https://fastdraft.contractexpress.com.
  2. Select
    Projects
    then
    New Project
    .
  3. Search Templates,
    expand the categories, or select
    All
    to show all templates, and select the template you want to use.
    note
    When you select a template, Fast Draft opens a questionnaire to help you draft your document based on the template.
  4. Choose from the following document view options for the questionnaire.
    • Preview
      to show live updates of the document as you answer the questionnaire.
    • View
      to change the detail shown when you are in Preview mode.
    • Hide Preview
      to show only the questionnaire.
    tip
    In Preview mode, you'll find links to show Practical Law drafting notes for the document.
  5. Select
    Address book
    to enter details about entities and reuse these details in this document and other documents.
    tip
    You can
    Import
    contact details from Microsoft Outlook and Google Mail to your
    Address book
    .
    1. Answer the questions in any order and select either
      Save & continue
      or
      Next
      to save your answers and move to the next section.
      note
      As you answer a question, Fast Draft highlights the part of the document affected by your answer if you are in Preview mode. Your answers shape the phrasing and terminology Fast Draft uses to draft the document.
  6. On the
    Preview
    pane, you can select an input field, shown by a link, to move to the relevant question.
  7. Select
    Save & Close
    to finish drafting the document.
    note
    You don't need to finish all the questions before you save. Fast Draft will close the questionnaire and open the Document screen.
  8. On the Document screen, you can choose:
    • Edit Questionnaire
      to continue answering the questions to draft the document.
    • Rename
      to rename this document.
      note
      Fast Draft will change the document name at the top of this screen, but the template name remains the same in the Documents table.
    • Delete
      to delete this document from the project.
    • Suspend
      /
      Continue
      to suspend or continue work on this document.
    • Upload New Document
      to add a Document from your device or network to this project.
    • View Versions
      : to view and open other saved versions of the document.
    • New Comment
      : to add a comment about the draft document. You can also edit and delete existing comments.
  9. When you've finished your draft document, select its title to download it in Microsoft Word document format.
  10. Select the project name to return to the
    Project
    screen or use the breadcrumbs.
