Tax Return Import/Export transition information
Tax Return Import/Export replaces Data Connection and introduces a new file format, expanded entity type support, and additional features for importing and exporting tax return data.
Licensing
Data Connection and Tax Return Import/Export use the same license.
Supported entity types
Tax Return Import/Export supports the following entity types for Tax Return Transfer: 1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 990, 706, 709, and 5500.
File format changes from Data Connection
Tax Return Import/Export uses a new file format that differs from Data Connection in the following ways:
- Two new data fields have been added: Data group 4 (field number 5) and Data group 5 (field number 6), increasing the total number of data record fields from 7 to 9. Field numbers 5 through 7 in Data Connection become field numbers 7 through 9 in Tax Return Import/Export.
- Tax Return Import/Export supports both JSON and CSV file formats.
Form and field names
All form and field names available in Data Connection are available in Tax Return Import/Export. The form and field names remain the same, minimizing the changes you need to make to existing import files.
Data source code
The data source code (O for Organizer, T for Tax Forms, and W for Workpapers) is the 9th and last data record field and is mandatory for Tax Return Import/Export. The file fails validation if the data source code is missing.
Import file size
The import size limit depends on the size of the return and the size of the import file. The larger a return is, the smaller the import file needs to be. For very large returns, break up the import into multiple smaller import files. To reduce size, if you are using an export file as a starting point for the import file, remove the T and W data record lines because those are export-only lines.
New features
Tax Return Import/Export introduces the following new features compared to Data Connection:
- Support for all group levels, enabling import and export of additional fields.
- The ability to import and export 706, 709, and 5500 data.
- Support for JSON and CSV file formats.
Planned features
Tax Return Import/Export will add the ability to export only specified forms.
API availability
An API is available for the Tax Return Import/Export process.
