File sets
Use the Tax Return Import/Export file set — an Excel workbook listing all fields enabled for import and export — to find form and field names, data types, navigation paths, and other reference information for each tax application.
The Tax Return Import/Export file set is an Excel workbook listing all fields enabled for import and export. It includes supplementary information such as navigation paths, storage values, data types, and lengths. Thomson Reuters publishes file sets the Wednesday before a general availability release in which the data dictionary changes for one or more tax applications.

File sets use the following file name structure:
TYTY-AAAA-tax-return-import-export-MM-DD-YYYY.zip
- TYTY:Tax year (for example, 2023)
- AAAA:Tax application type (1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 990, 706, 709, or 5500)
- MM-DD-YYYY:Release date

The MM-DD-YYYY designation in the file set file name represents the release date of the tax application MAP files documented by the corresponding file set workbook.

J | Data Type | The type of data the field can contain (for example, DOLLAR or ALPHANU); refer to Data Dictionary data type codes for details |

Additional worksheets
Each file set workbook contains the following worksheets in addition to the Data Dictionary:
- Org_Data_Dictionary
- Lists Organizer form and field names in the tax application that are enabled for Tax Return Import/Export. To determine whether a tax return Organizer data field is enabled, find the EOrgXREF name of the field and search this worksheet for that value. If the value doesn’t appear, the field is not enabled for import and export.
- Txf_Data_Dictionary
- Lists all form and field name combinations of fields on Tax Forms that will export. Tax Form fields don’t import.
- Wkp_Data_Dictionary
- Lists all form and field name combinations of fields on Workpapers that will export. Generally, workpapers are not enabled for Tax Return Import/Export export.
- Required_Fields
- Lists the required data fields for all form names in the tax application. When you import a data field associated with an activity or group that doesn’t yet exist in the tax return database, you must also import the required field for that form name to avoid trapped data. If the activity or group already exists, you don’t need to include the required field. Required fields have the value YES in column L of the Data Dictionary worksheet.
- Master_Group_Forms
- Lists all Master Group forms in the product. Master Group activities are different types of income with common fields. The form name determines which type of activity to associate with the common field data.
- Child_Forms
- Lists all child forms in the product. Child forms are activities with common fields that you can associate with different tax forms. Use this worksheet to identify forms that require parent token data records during import, which applies primarily to the 1040 tax application.
- Field_Collections
- Lists groupings of related fields where, if you enter data into any field in the collection, you must enter data into all fields in the collection. The Field_Required column contains True or False to indicate whether all fields are required.
- Field_Collection_Field_Rules
- Lists Field Collection Rule ID numbers where 2 fields are mutually exclusive — you can enter data into only one of the 2 fields.
- Field_Collection_Group_Rules
- Lists Field Collection Rule ID numbers where 2 groups of fields are mutually exclusive. For example, if you populate parts of a U.S. address, you must leave the corresponding foreign address empty.
- Discontinued_Forms
- Lists forms that appeared in the prior version Org_Data_Dictionary but no longer appear in the current version.
- Discontinued_Form_Fields
- Lists form, field, and EOrgXREF combinations of all discontinued fields from the prior version Org_Data_Dictionary that no longer appear in the current version, regardless of whether the form name is discontinued or still active.
- Discontinued_Fields
- Lists form, field, and EOrgXREF combinations whose form name is still active but whose fields appeared in the prior version Org_Data_Dictionary and no longer appear in the current version.
- Field_Changes
- Lists form, field, and EOrgXREF combinations for which the field name changed in the current version. Update any previous version field names to the current version field names, or the data will fail to import.
- Data_Changes
- Lists form, field, and EOrgXREF combinations for which field attributes such as data type, data length, or precision changed in the current version. The data must conform to the current version specifications or it may fail to import correctly.
- New_Form_Names
- Lists new form names in the current version Org_Data_Dictionary that didn’t appear in the prior version.
- New_Form_Fields
- Lists the form, field, and EOrgXREF combinations for fields on the forms listed in the New_Form_Names worksheet.
- New_EOrgXREF_Names
- Lists changed EOrgXREF values for form and field combinations that appear in both the prior version and current version Org_Data_Dictionary.
- Formatted_Fields
- Lists fields that require data in a specific format, such as Social Security number, phone numbers, or ID numbers with dashes.
- String_Values
- Lists the storage values to use when importing into dropdown list fields, along with the screen type, form, field, and text description of the field.
- Discontinued_String_Values
- Lists storage values that are no longer valid for import into the associated dropdown list fields.
- New_String_Values
- Lists storage values for new dropdown lists added in the current version.
- Changed_String_Values
- Lists changed storage values for dropdown list fields that appear in both the prior version and the current version.
- Org_Navigation
- Lists the navigation paths in the return for enabled Organizer fields.
- Txf_Navigation
- Lists the navigation paths in the return for enabled Tax Form fields.
- Wkp_Navigation
- Lists the navigation paths in the return for enabled Workpaper fields.
