Part of Thomas' degree required him to undertake a year-long, industrial placement. He joined Thomson Reuters in July 2012 as a Network Engineer Intern, working on the Network Design and Engineering Team. This was perfect as his degree is in Computer Systems and Networks. After 14 months, Thomas returned to finish his Computer Systems course; he then applied for a role as a Systems/Networks engineer looking after Financial & Risk development systems before moving into the enterprise cloud team 10 months later.
His team works on two-week 'sprints' where the composition of the sprint varies to hit different business needs. Sometimes he's writing software for a solid two weeks; the next week he may be reading about a new tool or methodology in order to propose the best approach for the company, or he could be leading recovery of a support issue.
Thomas is passionate about teaching the future generations of technologists. He help to set up and run CoderDojo sessions which enable kids aged 7-17 to learn programming skills, both in the wider community and in the Thomson Reuters community. He has led efforts to roll out CoderDojo sessions to Thomson Reuters offices all around the globe with the commitment of running 10 girls-only CoderDojo's this year to promote women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
