Review and revise the consolidated return

After the application finishes the consolidation, it provides some review tools to alert you to any potential errors within the consolidation.

Review diagnostics and overrides

Before printing the consolidated return, you should review both diagnostics and overrides. Diagnostics give you information about possible errors in the consolidation. To review diagnostics:
  1. Select
    View
    , then
    Diagnostics
from the menu bar. A screen will show the diagnostics.
  2. Select the diagnostic to go to the input field and make any corrections.
  3. Recompute the return.

Use subview

Subview
is a special feature that lets you review the amounts from each subsidiary included in the consolidation. Follow these steps from any Tax Form or Organizer field within the consolidated return:
  1. Position the cursor on the selected field, right click then select
    Subview
    from the context menu.
  2. A window shows the amounts from each division or the eliminations making up the total.
  3. If you need to make changes to a division, select the line for that amount.
  4. The application opens the return for that division and takes you to the selected field.
  5. You can make changes and select
    Close
on the toolbar to close the return. This returns you to the divisional consolidation.

Review consolidations

You can go to the following review tools from the
View
menu:
  • Diagnostics
  • Overrides
  • Transfer Errors
If you select any of these, the
View
menu opens the
Diagnostics, Overrides and Transfer Errors
window.
  • Hyperlinks
    — This opens the
    Related
window that displays related tax data. Selecting an item takes you to that item.
  • OLE Attachments
    — This opens the
    Links and Attachments
    window.
  • Subview
    — This helps you review consolidation data.
    Subview
is a special function which enables you to review a division’s data file from the consolidated return. This is especially helpful when processing consolidations with a large number of divisions.
    Subview
is available for all fields on the consolidation return.

Consolidation tips

The success of the consolidation process depends on the following guidelines within the individual return. The following are important considerations:
  • The consolidation return, where the merged numbers reside.
  • Where to enter the general information data you want to appear on the consolidated return.
  • Where and how to list the returns involved in the consolidation.
  • Consistency between returns about the level of data entry.
Other considerations include:
  • Clear all overrides at the division level to avoid unexpected results when you are consolidating. If you don't, the system may ignore the underlying detail that might be required during consolidation to perform accurate limitations in certain areas (for example, charitable contributions or gains and losses).
  • Don't enter data directly on the consolidated return except for required consolidated data and consolidated overrides. If you enter overrides on fields, that data will be removed when the application consolidates or reconsolidates the return. You may lock an override on the field by highlighting the field and selecting
    Lock
from the submenu. We don't recommend Override. Overrides cause the detail schedule to show adjustments.
  • Don't enter overrides on detailed information carrying from division to divisional consolidations. The overrides will be washed out when the return is reconsolidated, even if the overridden field has been locked.
