E-file for large partnership returns with partner allocations

Step 1 - federal and state

  1. Create a new locator or binder depending on the product (main return). Don’t include partner information in this return.
  2. Enter all the partnership information for both the federal and any states that will be electronically filed via XML. In this main return, after you enter all the partnership information, create e-files for federal and any states.
  3. Clear e-file diagnostics related to partnership forms before continuing to Step 2.
  4. Ignore the e-file diagnostics pertaining to partner information. The main return will be used starting in Step 5 to submit the qualified federal and state returns.

Step 2 - federal

  1. Copy the main return as needed. The number of copies of the main return created will depend on the rules for Partner allocations below, and the number of partners overall. Partners will be added to each copy of the main return.
  2. Don’t repeat a partner on these copies of the main return. We suggest you complete each copy of the main return through the end of Step 2 before making the next copy.
  3. If a return has extensive Schedule K-3 data, then limit copies of the main return to 3,000 partners in each return.
  4. If a return doesn’t have extensive Schedule K-3 data, we recommend no more than 5,000 partners in each return.
    Partner allocations enabled
    • Extensive k-3 data - maximum 3,000 partners
    • Limited or no k-3 data - maximum 5,000 partners
    Important!
When the Federal Schedule K-3 is in the main return: Within each copy of the main return, complete the Federal Schedule K-3 and Schedule K-1 for each partner. The K-3s must be in the same order as the K-1s.
