E-file shutdown period

To prepare for Tax Year 2025 filing season, the IRS will shut down individual and business MeF submissions on December 26, 2025 until late January 2026. This affects all federal returns, as well as state returns e-filed under the MeF fed/state program.
During shutdown, taxpayers and preparers shouldn't wait to file their returns:
  • If you have a balance due return where interest and penalties will continue to accrue, or where credits or refunds may miss deadlines, you should file as soon as you can, even if that means filing on paper.
  • If, as a preparer, you're required to e-file returns, include a Form 8948 with the paper return. Select checkbox 6c and enter text that e-file was closed for the season.

Thomson Reuters won't hold electronically filed returns during the shutdown. We'll reject them so they can be paper-filed.
