File format for use with Tax Return import/export

The Tax Return import/export files are comma-delimited text files and have the identical format and record structure - one header record followed by any number of data records. You can open these files with Microsoft Excel as well as other text editors, such as Word, Notepad, and WordPad.
In Microsoft Excel, you can:
  • Change header record data field values
  • Delete existing data records
  • Add new data records
  • Change existing data record values

Saving a spreadsheet file

Every record in a Tax Return Import Export import file, including the last data record, must be terminated by a carriage return-line feed pair. If the carriage return-line feed pair is missing from the last record in an import file, the field value on the last record won't be imported into the designated tax return database location.
Tax Return import/export files created from Excel using
Save
or
Save As
commands will have all records written to the .CSV file in the proper manner. Do not choose the
CSV UTF8
option when saving.
