Multiple Firms in a Matter | Lead vs Secondary Firms

Determine If Your Firm is the Lead Firm or Secondary Firm in a Matter

In every matter, your firm is identified as either the lead firm or a secondary firm.
note
Some matters do not have a lead firm, in which case all firms in the matter are secondary firms.
To find out if your firm is the lead firm in the matter:
Select
Matters
>
Matter list
in the left navigation. If your firm is a secondary firm in the matter, two hyphens (
--
) appear in the
Lead OC
field.
The matter profile also shows the lead firm information. If the
Lead OC
field contains two hyphens (
--
) on the profile, your firm is the secondary firm.

Implications of Being a Lead Firm

The lead firm is responsible for completing the matter profile in the matter. The lead firm may also be required to provide status reports, budgets and unbilled amounts (accruals) for the matter. Sometimes, a company will set up a matter so that the lead firm can review the secondary firm's invoices, budgets and unbilled amounts (in the situation of one firm managing local counsel).

Implications of Being a Secondary Firm

A secondary firm is not required to complete the matter profile and cannot be required to provide status reports. A secondary firm may be required to provide a budget and unbilled amounts.
