File types and filename requirements

To import data into a return, start by using a CSV file.
  1. You can get an example of this CSV file by going to
    Returns Processing
    .
  2. Select
    Import/Export
    , then select
    Export
, and select a return to export. After the process finishes, you can download the CSV file.
When you export a file, it automatically gets a default name. This name starts with the tax application letter (P for partnership) followed by the 6-digit return ID.
Keep in mind that the filename for an import file can't be longer than 30 characters, including the 4-character file extension. You can use spaces in the filename, but avoid special characters that Microsoft DOS 8.3 file naming conventions prohibit. If your filename goes over 30 characters, it won't upload to the servers, and you won't be able to import it.
The file extension is based on the tax application and tax year of the return. For the tax year 2024, all Direct K-1 import and export CSV files will use the extension PX4.
