Tax content updates

Tax data includes rates and rules for domestic and international jurisdictions.
Determination monthly content updates are automatically available so that you can calculate taxes using the latest rules and rates. You'll receive an email notification when the update's available.
The update letter lists many changes such as rates and pending legislation to help you manage your custom content and plan for future changes, and includes instructions for downloading and installing the update.
You should examine the release letter and the product taxability matrix that are part of the monthly update to see what new rates and rules will be implemented. Determination uses the most conservative interpretation of tax rates and rules. In some cases, that interpretation may not be what you need.
If you have a business case that requires you to apply a different rate or custom product taxability, you must make the change manually in your system. Download and install the new update content, and then change the few rates or rules that you want to calculate differently.
As transactions are processed, rules get evaluated according to their order in the rules lists for the associated authority. Once you create custom rules, they are processed before the tax data provider rules.
These examples suggest ways to handle a different rate or rule from the default provided in the monthly update:
  • If you have mapped a product to the standard content, the default rates and rules are applied. If you want to apply a different rate or rule, set up a custom rate or rule and map it to your product.
  • Use custom rules to add excise taxes, for example, or for a particular product.
  • Use start and end dates in custom rules and rates to keep track of the duration. This allows you to track the history of a specific rate or rule.
  • Rates and rule are processed in the order listed on the
    Rules
page. You can change the order of your custom rules to make sure they are implemented in the desired order.
  • Rule qualifiers are primarily used on custom rules.
