Reference Link (Tracing amounts)

You can trace amounts to see the relation between amounts in leadsheets.
Select the
Reference Link
icon to the left of dollar amounts on Form 1040 / Schedule A. This will take you to either the detailed leadsheet for that specific line or the source documents.
The detailed sheets will be generated in the following cases:
  • There is a variance for a line item of Form 1040, page 1 & 2 and Schedule A.
  • An amount reported in the
    Per Leadsheet
column of Form 1040, page 1 & 2 and Schedule A is an aggregation of multiple amounts. For example, When Form 1099 INT reports interest income in box 1 and box 3 (interest income on US obligations), then the amount reported on line 8a of Form 1040 is the sum total of box 1 and box 3 interest; thus the detailed Interest leadsheet is generated.
  • Other Income on line 21 of Form 1040 comprises Other Income from Schedule K-1 and gambling winnings.
  • The nature of the amounts changes when reported on the lines of Form 1040 and Schedule A. For instance, an expense entered in positive and reported on Schedule C appears as negative income on line 12 of Form 1040 as business income.
If there is no variance and the amounts reported on line items of Form 1040 / Schedule A are not a result of multiple calculations, the detailed leadsheet won’t get generated. In this case, the amounts on Form 1040 / Schedule A would directly be linked to source documents.
If a detailed leadsheet is generated for a line of Form 1040 / Schedule A, select on the
Reference Link
icon to the left of the dollar amount. The related source document is launched in the Document Image section of the
Upper Viewing Area
. The source amount reference is highlighted with a black border.
There are also link references near cells if the source amount for that cell transfers to one or more sheets/cells. This lets navigation between the source and destination cells.
If the destination amount is the sum of multiple source cells' data, then when you select the reference link of the total amount, it will take you to the leadsheet in which all the related amounts will be highlighted.
For example, if the income reported on
Schedule C: Jill's Craft
is the sum total of multiple 1099-MISC forms, when you select the reference link to the left of the total income, you'll be taken to the
Other Income
leadsheet in which all the 1099-MISC related to Jills Craft will be highlighted. This will make navigation easier.
Reference Links for amounts in the Per Tax Return column in Leadsheets
Reference links are also for amounts not calculated by leadsheet. An amount for that same line is entered in

These links appear to the left of the amount in

  • Form 1040 (Pg 2), Sch-1, Sch-2, Sch-3, Sch-4, Sch-5 Sch-A.
