Merge individual clients

Use this procedure to merge the client data from 2 clients into a joint client for filing a married filing joint return.
Before you begin these steps, complete the individual tax returns as much as possible before you merge. This includes the filing status.
  1. Go to the
    General input
    folder on the
    1040
    screen.
  2. Select
    File
    , then
    New Client
    .
  3. Select a preparer, then enter a client ID for the new joint client.
  4. In the
    Entity information group
    field, select
    1040
    .
  5. In the
    1040
    field, select
    Domestic Partner
    . You need to select
    Domestic Partnership
    for married filing joint returns. You'll change this later.
  6. Select
    Advanced Properties
    , then select
    Domestic Partners
    .
  7. In the
    Domestic Partners
    tab, select the taxpayer in the client list and select
    Select Taxpayer
    .
  8. Select the spouse in the client list and select
    Select Spouse
    .
  9. Select
    OK
    to close.
  10. In the
    New Client
    screen, select
    OK
    to begin the merge.
  11. If critical errors happen, you should address them before you continue merging the client. Warning messages are usually for information and may not need more work.
  12. The new joint client opens when the merge is complete. Select
    File
    , then
    Client properties
    .
  13. Change the
    1040
    field from
    Domestic partnership
    to
    Individual
    .
  14. Select
    Add State(s)
    to add state returns to the joint file.
  15. Select
    OK
    to close the window. If a warning message requires additional attention, make the changes to the new joint client.
  16. Review the merged joint client to be sure the results are correct.
