State-specific instructions
There are some states that tax pensions differently from the federal government. Therefore, if you are processing a return in one of these states, use the
State
and
State use
fields (and, in a few cases, the
RR tier 2 benefits
field on the 1099R screen and the
Averaging method
field on the 1099R-2) screen in the 1099R screen to identify pensions that are handled differently for state purposes.
If you are processing a state return, enter the state postal code in the
State
field. You can view a list of available state postal codes by pressing F4 in this field.
Source data entry
The UltraTax CS Source Data Entry utility enables you to enter data on facsimile versions of forms your clients submit for the preparation of their tax returns. Once the facsimile forms are completed, you can export the data to the application and transfer it into your client data files via the data sharing feature.

1099R Facsimile

This field is mandatory.
The city fields for the payer's and payee's addresses contain linked custom fieldviews, which enable you to automatically enter data in the corresponding payer or payee state and ZIP code fields. Select the down arrow for a city field and choose Edit Multi-field Custom Fieldview to open the Custom Fieldview dialog, in which you can enter or select a fieldview item for these linked fields.
Enter a code, if applicable. UltraTax CS displays the foreign country name based upon the code you select.
Enter the name of the foreign province or county. If the taxpayer has a foreign address, enter a period (.) in the
State
field.
  • For pension distributions: If the payer hasn’t calculated and displayed this information in box 2a, enter the client's pension distribution information in the Pension/Annuity Information section in the 1099R screen for UltraTax CS to calculate this amount.
  • For a traditional IRA distribution: This field should contain the same amount that is entered in the
    Gross distribution
    field.
  • For an early distribution from an IRA, UltraTax CS uses the lesser of the amount in box 2a, or the calculated taxable amount from Form 8606. If box 2a is left blank, no amount will be reported on Form 5329, line 1.
  • For an inherited IRA: Enter the preparer-calculated amount based on basis information.
  • For direct rollovers (distribution code G): This field should be 0 (zero). Refer to the 1099-R instructions for further details.
  • For a recharacterization (distribution code
    N
    or
    R
) or a Roth IRA distribution (distribution code
    J
    ,
    Q
    , or
    T
): This field should be blank.
  • For a current-year excess contribution, this field should contain the earnings being distributed.
When a postal code is entered in the
State

Press F4 from this field to view a list of codes applicable to the state for which you are processing the return. If you are processing more than one part-year resident return and need to divide the 1099R income among multiple states, enter each state's information in the Allocation statement using the following fields:
State
,
State Use
,
Gross Distribution
,
Taxable Amount
, and
Capital Gain
.
Except for the state postal code (which is always required), the required data for state processing is based on the type of retirement distribution. The following are examples of data entry for IRA and pension distributions in the Allocation statement.
  • Individual retirement account distributions
For traditional individual retirement account distributions that have basis, choose the state postal code and gross distribution amount for each state. The taxable percentage calculated on federal Form 8606 is applied to the state gross distribution amounts. If you enter a state taxable amount, this amount is used instead of the calculated amount. For individual retirement accounts with no basis, enter a state gross distribution and a state taxable amount in the fields provided. A taxpayer and spouse AGI IRA Worksheet for Part-Year Residents is available in state products with an AGI worksheet, which summarizes the state taxable amounts.
For the majority of Roth distributions, enter the state postal code and gross distribution amount and leave the
    Taxable amount
field blank. Qualified Roth distributions (Code Q) are not taxable. If you enter a state taxable amount, UltraTax CS uses this amount instead of any calculated amount.
  • Pension distributions
For pension distributions that calculate the taxable amount on the federal Simplified Method Worksheet or the General Rule Worksheet, enter the state postal code and the amount of gross distribution associated with the state in the Allocation statement. The calculated state taxable amount is based on the ratio of state gross distribution to federal gross distribution applied to the federal taxable amount.
For pension distributions where the federal taxable amount is reported in Box 2a, enter the state postal code, state gross distribution, and state taxable amount in the Allocation statement. The state taxable amount should be proportional to the state gross distribution entered in the allocation statement. For example, if the federal gross distribution is $100,000, the taxable amount is $70,000, and $80,000 of the federal gross distribution is allocated to a state, then 80% of the federal taxable amount ($56,000) should be assigned to the state.
Enter capital gains distributions in the state allocation when the
    Box 7 Distribution
    field code is
    F, Charitable gift annuity
    and the
    Box 3 Capital gain
    field contains an amount.
State use
After you choose a postal code in the
State

Per the Form 1099-R and 5498 instructions, box 5, Employee contributions/Designated Roth contributions or insurance premiums, must be completed when box 7, Distribution code, is C – Reportable death benefits under Section 6050Y. UltraTax CS doesn’t make any adjustments for this amount; therefore, make any adjustments deemed necessary to properly report the taxable amount of the distribution.
Enter the amount of net unrealized appreciation from Form 1099-R, box 6. Enter
X
in the
Include NUA in income
field in the Form 4972 - Lump-Sum Distributions Tax section in the 1099R-2 screen to have UltraTax CS calculate the amount of net unrealized appreciation to include in taxable income. If there is an amount in the
Capital gain
field, the portion qualifying for capital gain treatment is also calculated.
Go to the Form 1099-R, Box 7 codes page to use the correct code in this field.
If
X
is entered in this field, also enter the taxable IRA amount in the
Taxable amount
field. This field is not necessary for distributions with codes
B

Enter the current actuarial value attributable to the distribution received in the current year. When distribution code A is used, this amount transfers to the applicable line of Form 4972, Part III. If the distribution is made to more than one person, enter the percentage of the annuity contract attributable to the recipient whose data you are currently entering. In the
%

Use this field when the Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS) amount is different than the federal amount. Enter the amount shown on box 12 of Form IPERS 1099. This amount is used as the Iowa pension amount. You must enter
IA
in the
State
field and
1
in the
State use
field to enter an amount in this field. For Maine returns, enter the Maine taxable amount. You must enter
ME
in the
State
field and
1
in the
State use
field to enter an amount in this field. The amount entered is subtracted from the federal taxable amount to calculate the Maine pick-up contribution subtraction.
Use this field to enter the Maryland state pick up amount for box 19. Enter
MD
in the State field and enter
SPU
in the City code field, and then the corresponding Local distribution field will become available to enter the state pick up amount.
SPU
is only used on this screen. The lesser of the taxable amount entered in box 2a or the local distribution entered in box 17 is used to determine the state pick up contribution deduction on Form 502SU with code R.
For Ohio school district withholding, enter the four-digit school district code, or press F4 to view a list of taxing school districts. The amount withheld transfers to Schedule A as local withholding and to Ohio Form SD 100 for the school district.
These amounts carry to Schedule A.

If the distribution is a 1035 exchange (that is, if code
6
is entered in Box 7), don’t enter a rollover amount, as the exchange is already nontaxable and doesn’t qualify for rollover treatment.
Enter the amount of the exclusion from gross income for distributions from eligible government plans used to pay qualified health insurance premiums of an eligible retired public safety officer.
