Form 8689 - Part I, Income from the U.S. Virgin Islands

Use this section to enter U.S. Virgin Islands source income. Do not use this form for a bona fide resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands for the entire year. For joint returns with only one spouse as a bona fide resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands, see the Form 8689 instructions.
Enter wages, salaries, tips, etc., that were earned while in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Certain income earned while temporarily performing services in the U.S. Virgin Islands may not be considered U.S. Virgin Islands source income. For details, see IRS Publication 570, Chapter 2, De minimis exception.
Enter the amount of dividends sourced from a paying corporation that was created or organized in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Enter only taxable nonmirror code local U.S. Virgin Islands income tax refunds, credits, or offsets.
Enter the amount of alimony received from a person who is a bona fide resident of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Enter the amount of U.S. Virgin Islands source income in the applicable fields.

Form 8689 - Part II, Adjusted Gross Income From the U.S. VI

Enter any business expenses of reservists, performing artists, or fee-basis government officials apportioned to the U.S. Virgin Islands source income.
Enter one-half of the self-employment tax apportioned to U.S. Virgin Islands self-employment income. To calculate this amount, divide the U.S. Virgin Islands source self-employment income by the total self-employment income and multiply the result by one-half of the total self-employment tax.
Enter self-employed SEP, SIMPLE, or qualified plan deductions apportioned to U.S. Virgin Islands self-employment income. To calculate this amount, divide the U.S. Virgin Islands source self-employment income by the total self-employment income and multiply the result by the total amount of the deduction.
Enter any self-employed health insurance deduction apportioned to U.S. Virgin Islands self-employment income. To calculate this amount, divide the U.S. Virgin Islands source self-employment income by the total self-employment income and multiply the result by the total self-employed health insurance deduction.
Enter the amount of penalty on early withdrawal of savings accounts in U.S. Virgin Islands banks or U.S. Virgin Islands branches of U.S. banks.
Enter the total of the taxpayer's and spouse's IRA deductions attributable to U.S. Virgin Islands compensation or earned income. To calculate this amount, divide the U.S. Virgin Islands compensation or earned income by the total (worldwide) compensation or earned income and multiply the result by the total IRA deduction.
In the statement, enter any other deductions included on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 22, that are attributable to U.S. Virgin Islands income. The total amount of other deductions prints on Form 8689 to the left of line 28 and also includes the total in the line 28 total.

Form 8689 - Part IV, Payments of Income Tax to the U.S. VI

Enter the total U.S. Virgin Islands income tax withholding for the tax year. Do not include any United States income tax withholding in this amount.

Enter the amount, if any, of the

U.S. Virgin Islands overpayment that is to be applied to the
2025
U.S. Virgin Islands estimated tax payments. U.S. Virgin Islands overpayments cannot be applied toward amounts owed to the United States.
By default, the amount owed to the USVI is treated as the amount that will be paid with the income tax return. Enter the amount being paid to the USVI if it is different from the amount owed to the USVI shown on Form 8689, line 44. This amount will print as the amount to be remitted on the Form 8689 filing instructions.
