Use this screen to enter information for nonresidents and part-year residents to calculate Schedule CA (540NR), Part I.

This screen appears only for part-year residents and nonresidents. To change residency status, choose File, Client Properties, and then California tab and mark the applicable part-year resident or nonresident checkbox.

General Information

Enter residency information for taxpayers filing nonresident or part-year resident returns in this section. UltraTax CS uses this information to complete Schedule CA (540NR), Page 1.
State of domicile
Enter the two-letter postal code for the
State of domicile
or enter a period (".") for foreign address. This information is reported on Schedule CA (540NR) and is required for electronically filed return as well as paper-filed returns.
Military:
When the state or foreign country of domicile is anything other than California for a nonresident taxpayer or spouse, W-2 income coded as military income in federal W2 Screen is reported as a subtraction from federal wage income on Schedule CA (540NR) column B for nonresident returns and also subtracted from the federal Adjusted Gross Income for California calculations.
Part-year resident: Date moved into California/…/ New state of residence
For part-year residents, enter the date of move. Also enter the two-letter postal code, or enter a period ("") for foreign address for the prior state of residence, or the new state of residence in order to complete Schedule CA (540NR), line 3 or 4, and to file the return electronically.
Nonresident or full-year resident for entire year: State of residence
If the taxpayer or spouse did not assume or relinquish California residency during the year, enter the two-letter postal code for state of residency or enter a period ("") for foreign address.

Military Personnel

When the state or foreign country of domicile is anything other than California for a nonresident taxpayer or spouse, W-2 income coded as

Military income in federal W2 Screen is reported as a subtraction from federal wage income on Schedule CA (540NR), Column B for nonresident returns and also subtracted from the federal Adjusted Gross Income for California calculations. Use this section to enter military information reported on Schedule CA (540NR).
Qualified nonresident spouse
Income for personal services earned by a California nonresident who is a qualified military spouse is excludable from California source taxable income. Indicate in this field if the taxpayer or spouse qualifies for the exclusion. Income from wages entered in federal W2 Screen with a California postal code is excluded from Schedule CA (540NR), Column E, line 7 and Form 3506 earned income. All other income that is not taxable to California must be entered with a postal code of the resident state to be excluded from California source income.
State in which stationed
If the taxpayer or spouse was a military nonresident during the current year, enter the two-letter postal code or a period (".") for foreign address in which they were stationed. This information is reported on Schedule CA (540NR).
