Overview

Use this screen to complete Massachusetts Schedule Y and Form 1 or Form 1-NR / PY. If information transferred from UltraTax/1040 does not require additional data or coding, UltraTax/1040-MA displays it on the form only, not in the input screen.

Social Security Tax, Dependent Care, and Rental

Information entered in this section is used to complete Form 1 or Form 1-NR / PY and Schedule Y.
SS, Medicare, RR, US or Massachusetts retirement amounts: Taxpayer (Force) / Spouse (Force)
Use these fields to force the amount of Social Security, railroad, and pension contributions the taxpayer or spouse may take as a deduction for Massachusetts tax purposes.

Child under 13 or disabled dependent or spouse care expenses (Force)
UltraTax/1040-MA uses the amounts entered in the statement for provider information in federal Cr Screen to calculate the Massachusetts Child Under 13 or Disabled Dependent / Spouse Care Deduction Worksheet. Use this field to force a different amount for child under 13 or disabled dependent / spouse expense deduction allowed.
Rental information
Enter information for rental deduction in the statement. Returns using the married filing separate filing status, enter only rent paid by the taxpayer. Do not enter any rent paid by the spouse in this statement.

field on MAPYNR Screen.
Rent paid by spouse if different from amount paid by taxpayer
Available for married filing separate status only. If the spouse did not pay any rent, enter
0
(zero). If no entry is made in this field, the application assumes that the amount of rent paid is identical to the amount paid by the taxpayer. The application uses this information and the
Rental information
statement to calculate total rent and rental deduction allowable between the taxpayer and the spouse. The application then calculates a ratio based on taxpayer and spouse amounts and applies it to the allowable rental deduction reported on Form 1 or Form 1-NR / PY.

Other Deductions

Information entered in this section is used to complete Schedule Y.
Income received by firefighter or police officer incapacitated in the line of duty
Enter income received by a firefighter or police officer incapacitated in the line of duty. The amount entered appears as a deduction on Schedule Y and the appropriate checkbox is marked.
Income exempt under US tax treaty
Enter the amount of income that is exempt from Massachusetts taxation under a U.S. tax treaty and related information as required on Schedule Y; enclose federal Form 1042-S.
Military Spouses Residency Relief Act deduction
Use this statement to enter qualifying amounts for the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act deduction for Form 1-NR/PY returns only. Amounts entered here are included on Schedule Y, line 4. In addition, amounts entered here are used to adjust the following:
  • Form 1-NR/PY, line 14a - Total 5.05% Income (used to determine the Deduction and exemption ratio on line 14g)
  • Massachusetts Social Security Tax Deduction Worksheet, line 1 (Massachusetts W-2 wages) and line 6 (Massachusetts net self-employment income)
Self-employed health insurance deduction: Taxpayer (Force) / Spouse (Force)
1040-MA uses amounts for one-half of self-employment tax from federal Schedule SE to calculate line 7 of the Massachusetts Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction Worksheet. The total deduction from each worksheet is reported on Schedule Y. Use these fields to force the taxpayer and spouse amounts of self-employment tax adjustment used.
Other deductions
Enter other deductions to be reported on Schedule Y.
College tuition deduction
Enter the amount of Massachusetts Qualified Expenses if different from those entered in federal Educate Screen and the amount of scholarships received. Information is transferred from federal Educate Screen if Graduate Student code 1 is not present and is used in calculating the Massachusetts Education Deduction Worksheets and Schedule Y.
Human organ donation deduction
This is available for full-year residents only. Enter the amount up to the allowable deduction. See TIR 11-6 for more information.
Commuter deduction: Taxpayer
Enter the taxpayer and/or dependent amounts paid through a FastLane account and transit commuter passes for MBTA transit or commuter rail. If the employer paid for an MBTA pass, include only the portion reported as wages on Form W-2. For part-year and nonresident returns, enter the amounts exactly as they are to be reported on the return.
Commuter deduction: Spouse
Enter the spouse and/or dependent amounts paid through a FastLane account and transit commuter passes for MBTA transit or commuter rail. If the employer paid for an MBTA pass, include only the portion reported as wages on Form W-2. For part-year and nonresident returns, enter the amounts exactly as they are to be reported on the return.

Section 179 Expense

Information in this section is used to complete Form 4797, Part IV, Recapture Amounts Under IRC Sections 179 and 280F, and to calculate the allowable amount of Section 179 deduction.
Maximum dollar limitation for Section 179 (Force)
UltraTax CS calculates the limitation of Section 179 deduction. Enter an amount to force the maximum dollar limitation to a different amount.
Taxable income for Section 179 (Force)
UltraTax CS recalculates the taxable income used in the limitation of Section 179 deduction amounts based on Massachusetts income. Enter an amount if the taxable income for the Section 179 amount is different from the calculated amount.
