Prepare Form OUPC extension

Use the
OHExt
screen in the
Payments
folder to generate the Form OUPC extension.

Form OUPC payment, filing, and late penalty

  • Federal Form 4868 serves as the extension request. There is no Ohio-specific form that serves as an extension request. Ohio Form OUPC is a payment voucher only and doesn’t serve as the extension request.
  • As Form OUPC is a payment voucher only, the Department asks that you submit Form OUPC only with an accompanying payment.
  • The Ohio Department of Taxation doesn’t support electronic filing of Form OUPC via third-party applications such as UltraTax CS.
  • The Ohio Department of Taxation does give a means for taxpayers to make payments online or via telephone.
The Ohio Department of Taxation waives the Fail to File penalty on the unpaid balance of tax that's due as of the original due date if the taxpayer meets certain criteria. The Ohio Department of Taxation doesn’t have an extension request form. Instead, filing federal Form 4868 with the IRS serves as the Ohio extension request.
Generally, even if you file federal Form 4868 by the original due date, Ohio doesn’t waive the Fail to Pay penalty except for certain servicemen and military. Thus, for most taxpayers, the purpose of filing federal Form 4868 by the original due date is to waive the Ohio Fail to File penalty.

Prepare Form OUPC

Use the
OHExt
screen to complete Form OUPC. You can either have UltraTax CS calculate the payment amount, or manually force it.
  • To have UltraTax CS calculate the amount based on current data entered:
    1. Enter
      X
      in the
      Calculate Extension
      field on the
      OHExt
      screen.
    2. Select
      Setup
      ,
      1040 Individual
      , the
      Federal
      tab, then
      Extensions
to select the method for calculating the extension amount.
  • To force the amount: Enter an amount in the
    Balance due on extension (Force)
    on the
    OHExt
    screen.
  • If there is no balance due or calculated amount: While UltraTax CS supports printing Form OUPC without a payment amount, the Ohio Department of Taxation asks that taxpayers don’t submit Form OUPC unless there is an accompanying payment. Federal Form 4868 serves as the extension request.

Print the extension

When you finish entering data on the
OHExt
screen, select
File
then
Print Extensions
to print Form OUPC.

Prepare the return after filing an extension payment

Make sure you do the following when preparing an extended return:
  • Amount actually paid with extension:
The amount paid with the extension is reported on the
    Estimated an extension payments
line of Form IT-1040. Enter the amount on the
    OHExt
    screen in the
Extension payment actually made; reportable on main return
field. UltraTax CS populates this field when you create the extension. Change the data entry for this amount if the taxpayer paid some other amount.
  • Date return filed:
    Enter the
    Date return filed
    on the
    OHPen
screen. If the date exceeds the extended due date, UltraTax CS calculates a late penalty on the unpaid balance due.
  • Attach the federal extension:
UltraTax CS doesn’t automatically attach a copy of federal Form 4868 to Form IT-1040 when you use
    File
    ,
    Print Extensions
to print the federal extension. When filing on paper, include with Form IT-1040 a copy of the federal extension (Form 4868), the extension confirmation, or a printed copy of the IRS acknowledgment.
