IRC section 7216 requires preparers to receive consent from their clients to use or disclose their tax information for purposes other than preparing their tax return and, in certain limited situations, for purposes involving tax return preparation. This includes using "third party" return data entry services, offering bank products or services such as loans, business consulting, and compiling anonymous statistical data.
Thomson Reuters can't provide tax preparers with legal advice about these provisions. You'll need to seek counsel from your own legal advisor about the specific consequences to, and requirements for, tax preparers regarding IRC section 7216 and related Regulations. This would include seeking counsel prior to using any Data Mining searches for anything other than the preparation of tax returns to ensure you're in compliance with all laws and regulations.

Fields and buttons

Consent group box
Enter information in the fields in this section to prepare the Consent Letter for both the client's tax return and Data Mining.
Mark this checkbox to print the Consent Letter for all clients with their tax returns. If you don't mark this checkbox, consent to disclose or use information won't print with 1065 tax returns, unless information is entered in the
Consent
screen in the General folder.
Enter the date the consent will expire. If no expiration date is specified, all consents will include an expiration date of "One year from signature date."
Indicate up to four specific disclosure recipients or uses of the taxpayer's tax information. You'll need to enter data in at least one of these four fields to print the Consent Letter. A field for your client to affirmatively authorize the recipients and uses prints on the consent form.
