Return rejected due to absence of related federal return
Scenario
You may get the following error message when filing an Alabama return.
Error message
AL 1120 return is rejected due to absence of associated fed return. Please file a federal return.
Cause
You'll get this error message if the federal return is not present with/or already filed for the Alabama corporate return that you are filing via CS Connect. Alabama only accepts linked tax returns, which means the IRS needs to accept the federal tax return of the related Alabama corporate return before the Alabama return can be sent on to the Alabama Department of Revenue. The submission ID of the accepted federal return is inserted into the Alabama electronic file, and must be present to be considered a complete filing by the Alabama Department of Revenue.
Solution
Un-suppress the federal tax return from creating the electronic file on the federal ELF screen if it is suppressed. File it at the same time or before the Alabama return is filed electronically.
