E-filing information for municipal net profit returns

Electronic filing mandate

You need to file all municipal net profit returns and declaration of estimated taxes electronically unless you're granted an electronic filing waiver. Use the OH City
MNPWai
screen in the Electronic Filing folder to ask for a waiver.

Returns supported for electronic filing

You can file the following returns electronically:
  • C Corporation.
  • S Corporation.
  • Amended.
  • Short year.
  • Estimates (Form MNP ES filed separately from return).

Returns not supported for electronic filing

You can't file the following returns electronically:
  • Consolidated/combined.
  • Extensions.

Signature requirements for electronic filing

Ohio doesn't have a specific signature form for corporate returns. It considers the act of completing and filing electronically an authorized signature.

Resubmitting returns

To make a change to a return filed electronically and accepted by the state of Ohio, you'll need to amend the return. You can file the amended return electronically if you've properly identified it as amended Form MNP 10, Page 1.
If Ohio rejects the return, you may make the changes, correct the rejection, and resubmit it. If you can retransmit the return electronically, you'll need to file and have Ohio accept it by the return due date or 10 calendar days after you initially received the rejected acknowledgment, whichever is later.
You need to complete, transmit, and have the taxpayer's federal return accepted by the IRS before transmitting or retransmitting an MNP-only electronic file. Use the federal
ELF
screen to suppress the federal electronic file.
If you can't retransmit the return electronically, you'll need to file the return on paper by the due date or 10 calendar days after you initially received the rejected acknowledgment, whichever is later. Include an explanation of why you're filing the return late and a copy of the rejection.

Attachments

Ohio MNP needs a valid federal attachment in the electronic file. Therefore, if the IRS doesn't support electronic filing of the federal return, you can't e-file the state return.
Ohio MNP lets you include PDF attachments in the electronic file. General footnotes and required statements for the MNP return will generate as PDF documents and attach to the e-file.

Payment methods

Ohio MNP allows electronic funds withdrawal (direct debit), electronic funds transfer (EFT), money order, or check (with approval from the department) for balance due returns. You can't make partial payments.
You need to include bank information and a requested payment date when you request EFW. Ohio MNP will use the bank information you enter on the federal
Bank
screen. If you have different bank information for Ohio MNP, use the Ohio city
OHCBank
screen in the General folder.
