View and troubleshoot XML files

If you want to see what's included in the e-file for a return, you need to view the XML file. The IRS requires that e-file information be formatted in XML.
  1. Select
    Utilities
    , then
    Electronic Filing Status
    .
  2. Find the client in the list.
  3. Go to the
    Actions
column for the client and select
    Actions
    , then
    View XML
. If there isn't an option to
    View XML
, an e-file hasn't been created for the client.
  4. To find a specific form, line, or amount, use
    CTRL
    and
    F
keys on your keyboard to search.

Troubleshooting if the XML file won't open

If the file won't open, review your file associations. You might not have an application assigned to open XML files.
  1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Select
    Programs
    , then
    Default Programs
    .
  3. Select
Associate a file type or protocol with a program
    .
  4. From the list of Default apps, select
Choose default apps by file type
    .
  5. Select the app currently assigned to
    .xml XML Document
    .
  6. Select
    Microsoft Edge
    or
    Notepad
    .
