Process corrected 1099 forms
Follow these steps to process corrected 1099 forms.
Incorrect amount or 1099 filed in error
- SelectActions, thenEdit Payroll Tax Forms.
- Select the client from theClientdropdown.
- SelectCorrectedin theForm typedropdown, and1099in theFormdropdown.
- Select the form you need to correct in theOriginally Filed Formfield.noteTheCorrected Form to be filedfield defaults to the same selection.
- Select the year of the form to correct, thenRefresh. Select a copy to display from theFormdropdown.
- In theRecipient Selectiontab, select the recipients in theAvailable Recipientspane that need corrected forms, thenSelectto add them to theSelected Recipientspane.
- Go to theOriginal - Recipient Datatab and make sure the amounts for the selected recipients are reported as they were originally filed.note
- You can useOverrideandClear All Overridesto modify the information here if necessary.
- When filing the correction via theElectronicfiling method, additional set up is required forOriginal E-file Informationthat's available in either theOriginal – Recipient DataorCorrected – Recipient Datatabs. The Receipt ID, Submission ID, and Record ID need to be added for each 1099 recipient being corrected.
- Go to theCorrected - Recipient Datatab and change the recipient data to the correct information.note
- TheOriginal – Recipient Datatab and theCorrected – Recipient Datatab reflect the data and set up information currently in the client record. If you haven't corrected the information in the client record yet, make the corrections on theCorrected – Recipient Datatab only. If you've already corrected the information within Accounting CS, edit theOriginal – Recipient Datatab to match the form as it was originally filed. Then enter the correct information on theCorrected - Recipient Datatab.
- If the original 1099 was filed in error, the amounts on the corrected tab should be 0.
- Make any necessary changes to the information on theClient Datatab.
- When you're done making changes, select
Process Client Forms. Accounting CS creates:- A corrected 1099 form reporting how the amount boxes should've been reported.
- A 1096 form summarizing the amounts from the corrected 1099. Unlike other corrections, a 1099 with a wrong amount doesn't need notation.
- Select the appropriate copies and a filing method in theProcess Client 1099 Formswindow. Then selectProcess Selectedto print paper copies or queue the internet files.
No recipient ID number, incorrect recipient TIN, or incorrect recipient name
- SelectActions, thenEdit Payroll Tax Forms.
- Select the client from theClientdropdown.
- SelectCorrectedin theForm typedropdown, and1099in theFormdropdown.
- Select the form you need to correct in theOriginally Filed Formfield.noteTheCorrected Form to be filedfield defaults to the same selection.
- Select the year of the form to correct, thenRefresh. Select a copy to display from theFormdropdown.
- In theRecipient Selectiontab, select the recipients in theAvailable Recipientspane that need corrected forms, thenSelectto add them to theSelected Recipientspane.

Wrong type of return

These steps only apply to the
Preprinted
and Internet
filing methods. This type of correction isn't supported using the Electronic
filing method at this time.- SelectActions, thenEdit Payroll Tax Forms.
- Select the client from theClientdropdown.
- SelectCorrectedin theForm typedropdown, and1099in theFormdropdown.
- In theOriginally Filed Formfield, select the form type that was initially filed.
- In theCorrected Form to be filedfield, select the form type that should've been filed.
- Select the year of the form to correct, thenRefresh. Select a copy to display from theFormdropdown.
- In theRecipient Selectiontab, select the recipients in theAvailable Recipientspane that need corrected forms, thenSelectto add them to theSelected Recipientspane.
- TheOriginal - Recipient Datatab displays the original form data for the selected recipients. Verify the recipient name, EIN, and address.
- Make any necessary changes to the information on theClient Datatab.
- Verify the recipient name, EIN, and address.
- Complete the amount boxes as they should've been filed.
- TheOriginal – Recipient Datatab and theCorrected – Recipient Datatab reflect the data and set up information currently in the client record. If you haven't corrected the information in the client record yet, make the corrections on theCorrected – Recipient Datatab only. If you've already corrected the information within Accounting CS, edit theOriginal – Recipient Datatab to match the form as it was originally filed. Then enter the correct information on theCorrected - Recipient Datatab.
- Make any necessary changes to the information on theClient Datatab.
- When you're done making changes, select
