Fair Market Value of Equity Securities

This template may be used to obtain the fair market value of marketable equity securities at specified dates and calculate both realized and unrealized gains and losses on those securities. The template also summarizes the balance sheet, income statement, and note disclosure information related to the securities, in accordance with FASB ASC 320,
Investments—Debt and Equity Securities
. (The template should not be used for marketable debt securities. Use the "Debt Security Amortization" template for such securities.)

Entering Data

All of the data needed to produce the gain/(loss) calculations and related financial statement information is entered on the Input worksheet. The top section of the worksheet requests the following data needed to prepare report headers and financial statement information:
  • Client’s name
  • Name of the firm or person preparing the schedule
  • End of period and start of period dates (The end of period and start of period dates must be entered before the template will obtain stock quotes from the Internet. In addition, the dates must be entered before the template will perform the related gain/(loss) calculations and prepare the related financial statement information.)
The middle section of the Input worksheet requests the following data about marketable equity securities held at the financial statement date:
  • Security’s stock symbol or description (If the template’s "Get quote" feature is to be used, the security’s stock symbol must be entered, not its description. For example, enter the stock symbol MOT rather than the company name Motorola, Inc.)
  • Date purchased
  • Number of shares held at the financial statement date
  • Cost per share
  • Fair market values (Fair market values as of the beginning and end of the period may be entered manually by the user or obtained automatically by the template. See the “Obtaining Stock Quotes” discussion below.
The bottom section of the Input worksheet requests the following data about marketable equity securities sold during the period:
  • Security’s stock symbol or description (If the template’s "Get quote" feature is to be used, the security’s stock symbol must be entered, not its description. For example, enter the stock symbol MOT rather than the company name Motorola, Inc.)
  • Date purchased
  • Cost per share
  • Date sold
  • Number of shares sold
  • Sales price per share
  • Fair market value at beginning of period (Fair market values as of the beginning of the period may be entered manually by the user or obtained automatically by the template. See the “Obtaining Stock Quotes” discussion below.)
  • Classification (Indicate by clicking on the arrow in the drop-down list box and selecting the applicable classification:  available for sale or trading.)

Obtaining Stock Symbols

To use the template’s "Get quotes" feature, the security’s stock symbol must be entered, not its description (e.g. MOT rather than Motorola, Inc. and RSH rather than Radio Shack Corp.). Users of Excel 2000 (version 8.0) or higher who have Internet access can let the template find a security’s stock symbol if it is not known. Simply select the "Symbol Lookup" tab, enter any part of the security’s name in the space indicated, then press the "Find Symbol" button.

Obtaining Stock Quotes

Users of Excel 2000 (version 8.0) or higher who have Internet access can let the template obtain the fair market values for them. For the template to obtain stock quotes, make sure the correct end of period and start of period dates have been entered at the top of the Input worksheet and the security’s stock symbol has been entered in the appropriate cell. Then, press the corresponding "Get quotes" button. The template accesses Yahoo!’s Internet site at http://finance.yahoo.com to obtain closing market quotes as of the dates indicated. If the website cannot be accessed or if the format of the data in the website changes, the "Get quotes" feature will not operate properly. In that event, enter the security’s fair market value manually.
