Idle session timeout

As a CoCounsel administrator, you can set the idle session timeout interval for your organization after which users will be signed out automatically and will need to sign in again for access. This gives administrators greater control over session activity, ensuring a secure and efficient user experience.

Access user permissions

CoCounsel administrators can access the idle session timeout by going to the
Admin settings
from the sidebar and selecting
Idle timeout
.

Default and custom settings

Initially, by default, the idle session timeout is set to 90 minutes, and administrators can change it to 60 minutes or 30 minutes. These session timeout settings only apply when accessing CoCounsel from CoCounsel Standalone: https://cocounsel.thomsonreuters.com.
Set Idle Session Timeout
CoCounsel administrators can now configure how long users stay signed in when they are inactive. This setting applies to both the standalone CoCounsel web app and the CoCounsel Word Add-in.
The available timeout options are:
  • 4 hours (default)
  • 2 hours
  • 90 minutes
  • 60 minutes
  • 30 minutes
The idle session timeout now applies whether the app is open or closed. If a user returns to CoCounsel within the timeout period set by their administrator, they remain signed in. If they return after that period has passed, they'll need to sign in again.
note
The default 4-hour timeout applies only to new organizations. Any organization that had a previously configured default value won’t be affected.
How Idle Session Timeout Works
  • When the app is open, users are signed out after the configured period of inactivity. This behavior now works consistently across both the standalone CoCounsel web app and the CoCounsel Word Add-in.
  • When the app is closed, the same timeout setting is used. For example, if your organization's timeout is set to 4 hours and a user closes CoCounsel or the Word Add-in, that user remains signed in only if they return within 4 hours. If they return after 4 hours, they are prompted to sign in again.
What Changed
Previously, the standalone app and Word Add-in had different idle timeout behaviors. In the standalone app, administrators could set timeout values to 90 (default), 60, or 30 minutes while open, but closing the app didn't enforce the timeout, letting users to stay signed in until session expiration.
Now, both the standalone app and the Word Add-in use the same configurable timeout values, and the same timeout logic applies whether the app is open or closed.
Impact on Users
For standalone CoCounsel users, this change may noticeably affect sign-in behavior. Users who used to close their browser tab and return without signing in may now need to sign in again if they return after the timeout period. Depending on the setting, some users may need to sign in daily.
Examples
  • If the timeout is set to 30 minutes and a user is inactive for more than 30 minutes, they'll need to sign in again.
  • If the timeout is set to 2 hours and a user closes the app, they remain signed in only if they return within 2 hours.
  • If the timeout is set to 4 hours and a user returns after 4 hours, they need to sign in again.
