Use the CoCounsel Legal agent in Word

Read, summarize, and edit your open document through a chat experience grounded in Westlaw and Practical Law content.
The CoCounsel Legal agent in CoCounsel for Microsoft Word functions similarly to the CoCounsel Legal agent in the web, but is now available in the Word add-in.
The agent can read your open document to summarize it and answer questions, and it can make edits in the form of tracked changes or comments.
You can use the CoCounsel Legal agent in Word to:
  • Draft agreements from authoritative sources.
  • Review, update, and analyze contracts.
  • Summarize documents and track changes.
  • Cross-reference related provisions.
  • Compare against your playbooks and more.
  1. Use the chat
  2. Open Microsoft Word and sign in to CoCounsel for Microsoft Word.
  3. Select the
    Try the new CoCounsel
    switch.
  4. Set
    Auto-edit
    to control how the agent applies changes.
    • Auto-edit (tracked):
      The agent automatically creates tracked changes. You accept or reject them using the standard track changes feature in Microsoft Word.
    • Approve first:
      The agent presents proposed changes and waits for your approval before editing the document.
  5. Enter a natural language prompt in the chat to tell the agent what you need, such as asking it to summarize the track changes in the document.
  6. Review the agent's reasoning as it processes your request.
    • Select the expandable thinking area in the chat to review the steps the agent is following, such as reading the document or reviewing track changes.
    • Select the stop control at any time to halt the agent's current task. Once stopped, the agent won't proceed any further with that task.
  7. Review the agent's response, including any citations.

    Responses may include icons indicating points in your document supporting the agent's conclusions, as well as links to relevant Practical Law content. Select a document icon to jump directly to that location in the document.
  8. Select
    Chat history
    to view previous chats, or select
    New chat
    to begin a new conversation.
The CoCounsel Legal agent completes your requested task and returns a response. Responses include disclosures noting that the AI-generated content doesn't constitute legal advice, and requires professional review before use.
