Skill: Claims explorer

Category: Research

The
Claims Explorer
skill is designed to help you find potential claims or counterclaims for your fact pattern and to identify specific statutory, common law, and constitutional causes of action for further research.

Features and benefits

  • This skill lets you enter facts and quickly identify relevant claims or counterclaims.
  • In testing, attorneys who used this skill found relevant causes of action three times faster than when using traditional research methods.

Practice tips

  1. Select the relevant jurisdiction using the
    Edit
button. Choose 1 state plus federal, if relevant.
  2. Enter the fact pattern for the legal claims you want to explore.
    • The skill will provide a list of potential claims (statutory, common law, or constitutional) supported by the fact pattern with a detailed description of the legal requirements and an application of the law in the relevant jurisdictions to your facts.
    • The skill will tell you which claims require additional facts for support.
    • Outputs include links to cited sources in Westlaw.
  3. Use the tabs to filter results by jurisdiction (for example, Federal versus State) and by claims that are
    Supported
    or have
    Additional facts needed
    .

Limitations to keep in mind

  • You can select only 1 state jurisdiction at a time (plus federal).
  • Currently, available state jurisdictions are limited to: California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
  • Results are AI-generated and should be verified for accuracy.
  • The skill requires a Westlaw subscription in addition to a CoCounsel subscription but is available to subscribed users in the CoCounsel user interface.
