Skill: Compare documents

Category: Review

The
Compare Documents
skill is specifically designed to assist you in the tedious task of comparing multiple documents. Tailored for use with contracts, legislation, expert reports, and more, this skill lets you identify and understand differences and similarities across documents.
Unlike traditional comparison methods, the
Compare Documents
skill utilizes the power of AI models to provide a comprehensive analysis that identifies critical variations and connections.

Features and benefits

  • The skill provides a detailed side-by-side comparison, helping you delve into the subtleties of the text, ensuring nothing is overlooked.
  • Compare Documents
not only enhances efficiency by reducing the time spent on manual comparisons but also improves the precision and depth of analysis.
  • Compare two or more documents at a time.
  • Use
    Compare Documents
to identify broad stroke differences – or take a more nuanced approach – between documents. For example, you can identify the major differences between 2 opposing experts' reports or identify the subtle differences between 2 drafts of the same document.
  • CoCounsel will create a chart showing how your documents compare.

Practice tips

note
Be as precise as possible, as the skill excels at following instructions.
  1. For general differences between documents, simply ask CoCounsel to compare the documents.
  2. For more detailed results, use more specific user prompts.
    1. Ask CoCounsel to focus on a specific topic or provide analysis on whether one of the documents is more favorable to a certain party.
  3. To include specific categories within the comparison chart, identify the categories in your user prompt.
    1. If you are comparing depositions and would like to include deponent names, deponent dates, deponent roles, and the dates and locations of each deposition as separate categories in the chart, enter the following user prompt: "Compare these files, and be sure to include deponent names, the roles of each deponent, the dates of both depositions, and the locations of both depositions."
  4. The
    Compare Documents
skill will display the output in table format.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • While you can request a general comparison between or among documents, doing so may cause CoCounsel to focus on unimportant details.
  • To generate more tailored, relevant results, make sure to include specific details in your prompts.
  • CoCounsel produces
    Compare Documents
results in a predefined table, even if you request another format. As of the publication of this handbook, the skill is not optimized to customize table columns.
  • Additionally, you can ask CoCounsel, provided you do so in your initial user prompt, to determine table row order based on criteria you specify. For example, if you want to rank results, enter the following type of user prompt:
    • “Compare the insurance provisions within these contracts, and determine which provision would be most favorable to a hospital engaging in business with a company specializing in janitorial services. Rank the provisions from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most favorable provision, and 5 being the least favorable provision.”
  • The
    Compare Documents
skill upload limit is generally 200 documents (if your documents don’t exceed the thresholds noted in the file upload window).
  • A comparison will be less detailed if you choose to upload a particularly large number of documents (for example, a comparison of 100 documents will be far less granular in detail than a comparison of 5 documents).
  • Consequently, if you're seeking a more detailed comparison of documents, consider uploading a smaller number of files (for example, fewer than 10).
