Import variables from a template

The
Import variables
option allows authors to reuse variables from existing templates by importing them directly into their working template. Authors can search and select a source template, choose one or more variables, and import them through a guided workflow. Imported variables are automatically added as local variables, retaining their original properties and values, and can be managed like any other variable.
This helps authors work more efficiently by reducing duplication, maintaining consistency across templates, enabling reuse of validated variable definitions, and minimising errors from manual variable creation.

How to Import variables

To import variables into your template, navigate to the hamburger menu and select the
Import variables
option from the listed drop-down.
From the import window, you can select an already existing template by either typing the template name manually or selecting it from the available templates in the drop-down, allowing you to quickly locate and choose the template that contains the variables you want to reuse.
Once the source template is selected, the system displays all available variables from that template, allowing you to review and select one or more to import. You can then proceed through the guided workflow to confirm your selection and initiate the import.
You can either select all variables by clicking
Select all
or choose individual variables by manually selecting from the list. Once you are done selecting the variables you want to import, click
Add
. Alternatively, to remove any selected variable, select the variable(s) you wish to remove and click
Remove
.
note
If a variable with the same name already exists in the working template and is editable, it will be overwritten during the import process. Please review existing variables carefully before confirming the import.
Once all the required variables are listed in the
Selected variables
panel, click
Select all
in that panel to confirm your selection. Next, click
Import
to complete the process.
After the import is completed, the selected variables are automatically added to your current template as local variables in the Questionnaire section, where they retain their original properties and values from the source template and become fully editable and manageable alongside existing variables.
You can then use the new AI-enabled
Auto-setup
feature to arrange your Questionnaire.
