Add a journal entry
Use the
Journal entries
tab to add a journal entry to an engagement. If you are working in a parent consolidated engagement, you can add journal entries directly to child engagements without leaving the parent.You'll need a user account that has been granted permission to
Add Journal Entries
. Before you can add a journal entry, there will also need to be a Client, an Engagement, and some amounts in the Trial Balance. - On the Engagement dashboard, select the engagement to view it.noteIf the engagement is not on yourEngagement dashboard, useOpen engagementsto add it.
- Select theJournal entriestab.
- Select the
Add entrylink. - If you are working in a parent consolidated engagement, select the child engagement you want to add the journal entry to from theEngagementdropdown.noteTheEngagementdropdown only appears in parent consolidated engagements. The account list updates to display only the accounts that belong to the selected child engagement. If you are working in a divisional engagement, select the division you want to add the journal entry to from theDivisiondropdown. The account list updates to display only the accounts that belong to the selected division.
- Enter a reference number in theReferencefield, then choose aTypefor your journal entry.
- Non-consolidated engagements: Adjusting, Reclassifying, Federal Tax, State Tax, Other, Other 2, Other 3 and Proposed.
- Consolidated engagements: Eliminating, Reclassifying, Federal Tax, State Tax, Other, Other 2, Other 3 and Proposed.
- Choose from one of the following Roll Forward options:
- Exclude
- Include
- Reverse
- Zero balances
- You can add a workpaper reference by using theWorkpaper referencefield or look up the workpaper by using theSearchbutton. SelectXto remove the reference. If you choose to enter a workpaper reference, you can also selectAttachmentto add a reference used by another existing workpaper.
- Enter theAccount,Description,Debit, andCredit.
- Select
Select Accountto open theSelect Accountscreen, where you can search for accounts by the account number or description and select one or multiple accounts, then selectAdd to journal entryto add it to the grid. - Optional: SelectAdd new accountif you want to add new accounts while you're on this screen.
- Optional: SelectColumnsto customize the columns you want to display on this screen.
- You can select theTrial balancelink to open the trial balance in another window.
- Engagement Manager saves the journal entry automatically, but you can select theDonebutton to go back to the list of journal entries.
The Journal Entries grid on the
Journal entries
tab and the Adjusting JE column of the Trial Balance tab are updated with your saved entries.
note
You can enter journal entries that are out of balance. If a journal entry is out of balance, this is indicated on the
Status
column.
