Storage capacity

FileCabinet CS does not set a size limit on the amount of client drawers or documents allowed within drawers.
note
Large drawers or databases can lead to slower performance of FileCabinet CS. Consider compacting drawer data or archiving documents to reduce drawer size when necessary.

FileCabinet CS directories

FileCabinet CS main default directories:
Directory
Description
\WinCSI\Cabinet
This directory contains program level files and folders on the network. In addition to the executables the program utilizes, it also contains imperative .dll files, additional installable modules such as the SQL database location setup and the FileCabinet CS print driver, as well as folders where license and program updates are ran from and stored.
\WinCSI\FcabSys
This directory contains systems related content on the network. This consists of configuration files for global settings and file locations, lock files, user specific preference files, and temp folders for various print jobs and CS Connect transmissions.
\WinCSI\FcabData
This directory is the default flat-file data location. This directory contains drawer data and data location specific configuration files. FileCabinet CS allows for the ability to create multiple data locations and customize the folder name and location. Due to this, your data locations may not follow the same naming convention or reside in your WinCSI directory.
note
The directory paths listed assumes that the WinCSI is default directory used. If you install FileCabinet CS to an alternate directory, please adjust accordingly. Additionally, the FcabData directory is the default directory for FileCabinet data, but may be modified or different if you have multiple data locations.

Files by category

Listed below are important FileCabinet CS files sorted by category.
Lock files
Lock files restrict access to files within FileCabinet CS by allowing only one user or process access at any specific time.
FileCabinet CS has several types of lock files:
File Name
Description
Details
U***.<UID>
User Lock files
If the user has multiple FileCabinet CS sessions open, there will be multiple U lock files for that user (but all of these files will only count as one user in the system). When FileCabinet CS is determining how many users are in the system in order to determine if the maximum licensed users are in the system, it compares the UID and $ulock folders, and if the same user is listed in both, that still only counts as one lock.
X***.<UID>
Exclusive Lock files
These exist if a user is performing a task that should keep everyone out of FileCabinet CS on the network (e.g. running CS Connect updates or converting data files).
L***.<UID>
Light User Lock files
These are created when a user is editing an embedded object and when printing to FileCabinet CS. These are also created when opening Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, since they can have the FileCabinet CS add-in toolbar.
lockole.cc$
Embedded lock file
These are created within the drawer directory. If the user receives a message that it cant be opened because a user already has it open, the lock file may be deleted if no one has the file open. The embedded lock files are at: \WinCSI\FcabData\<drawerID>
note
  • *** represents any characters.
  • <UID> represents the user's identification. FileCabinet CS pulls this ID from the computer name in your Windows operating system.
FileCabinet CS has three main locations for lock files:
Directory Path
Description
\WinCSI\FcabSys\UID
The UID folder contains a lock for every user who has FileCabinet CS open.
\WinCSI\FcabSys\$Ulock
The $ulock folder contains U, X, and L locks.
\WinCSI\FcabData\$Ulock.fcd
The $ulock.fcd directory can also contain X and L locks. X locks can be created if a user is performing an exclusive task on one data location (such as compacting), but users should be allowed to open other data locations.
Actions that set an exclusive lock:
  • Compact (lock applied to current data location)
  • Archive creation (lock applied to current data location)
  • Conversion (lock applied to all data locations)
  • Setting up Advanced Security
Actions that set a light lock:
  • Active X document viewing
  • Page adder dialog
  • Opening a Microsoft Office application that can include the FileCabinet CS add-in toolbar
Actions that are disallowed for other users when an exclusive lock is present:
  • Add folder when UltraTax CS client is added
  • Add folder when UltraTax CS client is proforma'd
  • Automatic backup during proforma
  • Automatic backup when closing
  • Populate
  • Populate with UltraTax CS folder creation
  • Setting up Advanced Security
  • Active X control
  • Page adder dialog
  • Running fcab.exe
  • Running fcabcnv.exe

This file controls integration with CS Professional Suite applications and 3rd party programs.
\Wincsi\Cabinet
Fcabapp.exe
Beginning in version 14.x, this is the executable for FileCabinet. Rather than use a locally installed executable, FileCabinet runs the program through this file on the network.
\Wincsi\Cabinet
Fcab.exe
In versions prior to 14.x, this was the executable for FileCabinet on the network that all workstations used. Currently, this file is used to help confirm the version of the program in case an update is needed, and also consists of configurations allowing the program to be ran across a network.
\Wincsi\Cabinet
Zfcvers.dat
Version file. This program should be updated automatically when the program version is upgraded and is what the license verifies again in order for the licensed features to run properly.

SQL files
When using a SQL data location, the data is stored separately in the database according to your SQL instance setup. However, a few program files are kept in the WinCSI directory rather than the database in order to communicate with SQL and function properly. Most of these files will reside within the automatically created \WinCSI\fcabdatadb folder. Under that directory, there will be a folder for each SQL data location with the naming convention of ComputerName_InstanceName.DatabaseName. The following files and folders pertain to a SQL data location:
Directory Path
File Name
Description
WinCSI\fcabdatadb\ComputerName_InstanceName.DatabaseName
Zfcdb.dat
This file holds information on the SQL database that the data location is using like it's version and location.
WinCSI\fcabdatadb\ComputerName_InstanceName.DatabaseName
Zfcpaths.txt
This holds the location and other information related to this specific data path.
WinCSI\fcabdatadb\ComputerName_InstanceName.DatabaseName\$sysdata
Zfcfocus.<UID>
This the focus list file for each user in this specific database.
WinCSI\fcabdatadb\ComputerName_InstanceName.DatabaseName\$Ulock.fcd
N/A
This directory contains the lock files related to this particular data location. Please see the Lock Files section above for more information on the different types of lock files.
WinCSI\FcabSys\
Networkinstallation.ini
This file defines some settings needed to setup a SQL data location. It is created as a result completing the SQL setup wizard at \WinCSI\CABINET\sql\setup.exe.
note
ComputerName is the name of the server that your SQL instance for FileCabinet CS resides on. InstanceName is what you named your SQL instance during it's creation, which is "CreativeSolution" by default if done through the program's provided installation files.
Drawer backup files
Backup files will be saved to the designated location at the time of backup.
Directory Path
File Name
Description
Designated backup location\ClientID\
ClientID.cc!
This file holds drawer backup data.
Archive files
\WinCSI\FcabData\$Archive
is the default directory for archived data. The first archive created will create a Volume directory where archived data is stored. Each additional archive created in the same directory will have a unique folder name that increases by an increment (e.g. Volume.000, Volume.001, etc.).
Directory Path
File Name
Description
\WinCSI\FcabData\$Archive\
