Depreciation: Switch to straight line to maximize deduction

The switch to straight line is automatic and there is no option to turn this feature off for assets using the ACRS or MACRS method. To turn off this feature for assets not using ACRS/MACRS:
  1. Go to
    Setup
     while in the
    Asset List
     window.
  2. Select
    Options
    .
  3. Select the
    Continue declining-balance with no switch to straight-line
     checkbox.
    When a switch to straight line has occurred, it is noted in the
    Commentary on the Display Calculation
     dialog within the
    Asset Detail
    .
    note
    According to Publication 946, How to Depreciate Property, when using a declining balance method, you must switch to the straight-line method beginning in the 1st year for which it will give an equal or greater deduction.
