Form 4868 instructions print requirements
Instructions for Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, print when specific extension and filing instruction options are selected in the Organizer.
To print instructions for Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return:
- Go to tab.
- ForFederal Extension Options (Mandatory), select an extension options other thanNot Applicable.
- ForFiling Instructions, select eitherPreparer Extension InstructionsorTaxpayer Extension Instructions.
- Go to .
- SelectDo Not Generate Batch Package.
- To generate e-file instructions instead of paper-file instructions, go to tab.
- Mark theEnable Federal Form 4868checkbox.
- Do a full recompute, then print.

If the preparer mails the extension for the taxpayer, the Filing section of the filing instructions states that the preparer has mailed the application for extension and omits the mailing address from the instruction letter.
If the taxpayer mails the extension themselves, the Filing section shows the mailing address the taxpayer should use to send the application for extension.
If the form doesn't print, check if it's suppressed:
- Make sureSuppress Extension Instructionsis cleared in the Extension Filing Instructions section.
- Do a full recompute, then print.
