Calculate MFS tax and create 2 new returns
Generate 2 married filing separate (MFS) returns from data entered on a married filing joint (MFJ) return.
Federal data transfers from the joint return to the separate returns based on the ownership code.
- Taxpayer (T): Transfers directly to the taxpayer's return.
- Spouse (S): Transfers directly to the spouse's return.
- Joint (J): Allocated 50/50 and transfer to both returns.
- To calculate MFS tax with 2 new returns:
- In the married filing joint locator, go to .
- SelectMFS Returns from MFJ.
- Select the 2nd taskTo calculate MFS tax and create 2 new returns.
- Enter all necessary TSJ ownership codes for the joint return.
- Do a full recompute.
- SelectCalculate Tax for Separate Returns, thenOK.
- When the calculation is done, selectOK.
- To get a detailed report of the tax calculations, selectView Comparison Schedule.
- To create the new returns, selectCreate New Locatorsand make note of the locator numbers. You can access the taxpayer's and spouse's returns to complete any additional entries.
