Common questions when transitioning from DK-1 2023 to DK-1 tax year 2024 and beyond

Common questions about transitioning existing Direct K-1 import files and workflows from tax year 2023 to tax year 2024, including file format changes, new required fields, and API availability.
When transitioning from the 2023 Direct K-1 (DK-1) Import Tool to the 2024 version, several changes affect the structure of the PX3 import file. Review the following information to understand what must be updated in your existing import files before using them with the 2024 tax application.
note
Before transitioning, review the 2024 DK-1 Import Tool Release Notes and the updated DK-1 workbook (2024_1065_DK1_MM-DD-YYYY.xls). Open the workbook and review the Discontinued, Changes, and New worksheets. Any items listed in those worksheets require an adjustment in your import file (PX3) if you are using the specific field listed.

Enhancements

Refer to the Direct K-1 enhancements topic for the latest improvements included in the 2024 release.

File format changes

In the 2023 DK-1 format, data records contained 7 data fields — 6 mandatory and 1 optional. In the 2024 format, 2 new data grouping fields have been added to the data record structure, increasing the total number of fields from 7 to 9.
The 2 new fields are:
  • Data_Grouping4
(Field 5): YES in the DK-1 workbook means a data record requires a non-zero value for Data_Grouping4.
  • Data_Grouping5
(Field 6): YES in the DK-1 workbook means a data record requires a non-zero value for Data_Grouping5.
As a result of these 2 new fields being inserted at positions 5 and 6, the fields that previously occupied positions 5 through 7 in the 2023 data record now occupy positions 7 through 9 in the 2024 data record. Existing PX3 import files must be updated to reflect these new field positions.
The form names and field names used in data records remain the same as in 2023. Only the field position numbers within the data record structure are affected by this change. This means you don’t need to rename any form or field references in your existing import files, but you must insert the 2 new grouping fields at the correct positions.
The header record structure (6 mandatory fields including the replacement flag) is unchanged from 2023. Replacement flag behavior (M, R, U, S) is also unchanged.

Other differences

Data source code field (Field Type) is now required
In the 2023 format, Field 7 (Field Type) was optional for import. Its values are O for Organizer, T for Tax Forms, and W for Workpapers. On export, this field was always populated with O or T.
In the 2024 format, this field — now at position 9 in the data record — is required for import. The file won’t pass error checking if the data source code field is missing. Existing PX3 import files that omitted this field in 2023 must be updated to include it before importing into the 2024 tax application.
API availability
An API is now available for the DK-1 Import/Export process. The API provides an alternative to the RS Browser-based import/export workflow for firms that want to automate or integrate the DK-1 process with other systems. Refer to the Direct K-1 API documentation for details on authentication, endpoints, and usage.

Updating existing import files for 2024

To update an existing 2023 PX3 import file for use with the 2024 tax application:
  1. Open the 2024_1065_DK1_MM-DD-YYYY.xls workbook.
  2. Review the Discontinued, Changes, and New worksheets for any field name or data type changes that affect your import file.
  3. Insert the 2 new data grouping fields (Data_Grouping4 and Data_Grouping5) at positions 5 and 6 in each data record, shifting the existing fields at positions 5 through 7 to positions 7 through 9.
  4. Add the data source code field (O, T, or W) at position 9 in each data record if it was previously omitted.
  5. Verify that the header record contains 6 data fields and includes a valid replacement flag (M, R, U, or S) in the last field.
  6. Save the updated file with a *.PX3 extension before importing.
