IND-144 e-file error
You get this error when there's an amount for excess Social Security and tier 1 RRTA tax withheld, but there's only 1 W-2 included in the e-file for the employee.
Error message
If 'ExcessSocSecAndTier1RRTATaxAmt' in the return has a non-zero value, then at least two Form W-2s with the same 'EmployeeSSN' must be present. (rule IND-144)
Solution
- Go to theOrganizer, thenSource Documents(W-2, 1099s, 1098).
- SelectW-2.
- If there's only 1 W-2 for the employee with excess tax withheld, refer to IRS Topic No. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA Tax Withheld.
- If there are 2 W-2s:
- Make sure the Social Security number matches on both, and matches the taxpayer or spouse's SSN.
- Double check the Box 1 wages.
- Make any changes if needed.
- Do a full recompute, then recreate the e-file.
note
- If 1 of the 2 W-2s has0entered in Box 1, you'll need to paper file the return.
- The IRS doesn't allow W-2s with 0 wages to be included in the e-file.
