Error
If CTCODCAmt in the return has a non-zero value, then each DependentSSN in DependentDetail with corresponding EligibleForChildTaxCreditInd checked must not be an ITIN. You may be eligible to claim the "Credit for other dependents" if the child resided with you in the United States and you meet the other requirements for the credit. (rule IND-154-01)
Cause
If claiming the Child Tax Credit for any dependents, the dependent needs to have a SSN instead of an ITIN, as ITINs are used for certain nonresident and resident aliens and dependents who can't get a SSN.
Solutions
If you don't want to claim the Child Tax Credit:
- Go to theOrganizer, thenGeneral Information.
- SelectDependents, thenDependent Input.
- Select the dependent causing the rejection.
- Make sure theQualifies for Child Tax Creditand/orQualifies for Additional Dependent Needsfields are empty.
If you want to claim the Child Tax Credit:
- Go to theOrganizer, thenGeneral Information.
- SelectDependents, thenDependent Input.
- Select the dependent causing the rejection.
- Make sure theSocial Security Number (or ITIN / ATIN)field is correct. If it isn't, correct it.noteIf the number in the field begins with any number between 900 and 999, it's an ITIN and therefore not eligible for the credit per Publication 4164.
- If the SSN is correct, paper file the return or contact the IRS e-Help Desk at 866-255-0654.
