R0000-503-02 e-file error

The IRS e-file database includes a name control and Social Security number for each filer. This rejection means that the information sent in the e-file doesn't match what the IRS has in the database.

Error message

'SpouseSSN' and 'SpouseNameControlTxt' in the Return Header must match the e-File database. (value #########, rule R0000-503-02)

Solution 1: Remove deceased spouse information for prior year death

  1. Go to
    Organizer
    General Information
    Basic Return Information
    Taxpayer Information
    and remove the spouse's information.
  2. Perform a full recompute, recreate the e-file, and resubmit the return.

Solution 2: Verify spouse's SSN and last name

  1. Confirm the spouse's Social Security Number and last name are entered accurately in
    Organizer
    General Information
    Basic Return Information
    Taxpayer Information
    .
  2. If the details are correct, have the taxpayer contact the Social Security Administration to verify the information on record.
  3. If the SSA records match, determine whether to wait for the IRS update or send a paper return.

Solution 3: Contact IRS e-Help desk

  1. Verify the accuracy of the spouse's SSN and last name in the return.
  2. Contact the IRS e-Help desk to verify if their database reflects the same information.
  3. If the issue persists, continue working with the IRS for further resolution.

Solution 4: Remove spouse's SSN for individual filing

  1. Go to
    Organizer
    General Information
    Basic Return Information
    Taxpayer Information
    .
  2. Remove the spouse's SSN.
  3. Perform a full recompute, recreate the e-file, and resubmit the return.

Solution 5: Check dependent information

  1. Check for incorrect entries in
    Organizer
    General Information
    Dependents
    Dependent Input
    , particularly the SSN and name data.
  2. If accurate, advise the taxpayer to contact the Social Security Administration for verification.
  3. Remove the dependent if the issue continues.
  4. Do a full recompute, then recreate the e-file.
