Error: 'SectionBApportionMethod' cannot be empty

You get this error when Virginia Form 500, Schedule A (Multistate Corporation) is missing the apportionment method selection for one or more subsidiaries in a consolidated return. This typically happens when a subsidiary has no apportionment data entered.

Solution 1

Ensure all members of the consolidated return use the same apportionment method.
  1. Go to
    Tax Forms
    States
    Virginia
    Apportionment Forms
    500, Sch A - Multistate Corporation
    .
  2. In Section A, subview on
    Multi-Factor Formula with Double-Weighted Sales
    .
  3. Open any of the
    Subsidiaries
    where there is no
    X
    in this field (indicating no apportionment in this entity).
  4. On each
    Subsidiary
    with no apportionment, go to
    Organizer
    States
    Allocation and Apportionment
    Organizer
    Overrides
    Virginia
    Payroll and Sales
    .
  5. Enter
    NONE
    for any
    Sales
    field for all subsidiaries.
  6. Make sure line 9 of Form 500, Sch A is now marked with an
    X
    .
  7. Do a full recompute, then recreate the e-file.

Solution 2

  1. Go to
    Organizer
    States
    Virginia
    Combined Consolidated Information
    .
  2. Select the
    Member of Affiliated Group
    section.
  3. Enter the information for
    Date became part of affiliated group
    .
  4. Once everything has been entered, select
    Transfer to All Members
    .
  5. Do a full recompute and reconsolidate the
    Topcon Return
    .
  6. Recreate the e-file.
