Clear trapped data
Trapped data happens when you import a data value using a
Copy Number
or Group number
that doesn't exist in the target group, and the required field for the group isn't in the import file.Scenario
You've imported data but it isn't appearing in the locator and it's become trapped data.
Solution
To clear trapped data:
- Open your locator/return, go to theOrganizerscreen with trapped data.
- Right-click and selectField Info, and make note of theAreanumber.
- Next, go toTools,Validate and Repair.
- In theRecords to Showsection, selectBad input records.
- In theProblems to Findsection, selectRecords with missing interesting. This should be the only option selected.
- SelectLoad.
- In theASFL Keycolumn, find your area number from step 2.
- Scroll to the right to theMissing Int Fieldcolumn where it shows the area, screen, and field numbers. Make note of these numbers.
- Close theValidate and Repairwindow, and go back to theOrganizerscreen with the trapped data.
- Right-click a field with trapped data, selectField Info, and verify its area, screen, and field numbers match the numbers you noted fromValidate and Repairin step 8.
- Right-click the field again and selectData Dictionaryto get the form and field name used for import.
- Search your recently imported file(s) to see what activity number was used to import the trapped data.
- Create a new black import file with theMflag and use the data dictionary from the required field and activity number from the trapped data. You can now delete the entire activity from inside the locator/return by selecting the minus sign by that particular activity in the navigation sidebar on the left.
Alternative method of clearing trapped data
Another method to clear trapped data is use of an import file with the
H
flag. Before importing, the H flag creates a list of all form names present in the import file and deletes from the locator any data from fields listed under those form names in the Organizer tab of the build report. To delete only data from a single form:
- Make sure the import file only contains lines with that form name.
- Export the locator.
- Filter the export file to the lines with that form name that contain the desired activity number(s).
- Copy those lines to an import file.
- Import into the locator using an H flag to re-input the desired data while clearing the trapped data.
