Responsibilities of the Lead Outside Counsel

Users from the lead firm are responsible for:
  • Completing the matter profile.
  • Submitting status reports for the matter (if required).
  • Entering a total budget for the matter (if required).
The Lead Outside Counsel is automatically given a matter role of Matter Administrator when the matter is created. This lets the Lead Outside Counsel edit all data that your firm can access in the matter and add or remove participants from your firm in the matter. The role of Matter Administrator cannot be changed, which ensures that the Lead Outside Counsel always has full authority in the matter.

There can be more matter administrators than just the Lead Outside Counsel. At a minimum, the Lead Outside Counsel is always a Matter Administrator.

View the Outside Counsel for a Matter

There are several ways to view the outside counsel for a matter. For example, you can click
Matters > Matter List
in the left navigation to view the matter list, or you can view the lead firm in the matter profile.
The Lead Company Person and Lead Outside Counsel information is important for sorting and grouping matters, for assigning responsibilities and for historical record keeping purposes.

Change the Lead Outside Counsel

Required role:
Only the Matter Administrators for a matter can change the Lead Outside Counsel for the matter.
This topic applies to your firm only if you are the lead firm in a matter. It does not apply to matters in which you are a secondary firm.
To change the lead outside counsel for a matter:
  1. Click
    Matters > Matter List
    in the left navigation.
  2. Click the name of the matter you want to change the Lead Outside Counsel for.
  3. Click
    Edit
    in the toolbar.
  4. Click
    Select
    for
    Lead Outside Counsel
    .
  5. Click
    Select
    for the user who is the new Lead Outside Counsel.
  6. Click
    Save & close
    in the toolbar. If this user is not already a participant in the matter, the user is automatically added to the matter.

When a new Lead Outside Counsel is selected for a matter, the prior Lead Outside Counsel is not automatically removed from the matter. This means that the prior Lead Outside Counsel will still have access to the matter information.
