Duty and Tax Calculation

After performing a search, the screen will change to display a step-by-step process to complete the calculation. The steps shown on this screen vary by country, as the associated charges vary per country.

Main/Preferential Rate

In the
Main/Preferential Rate
step, select which rate applies to the transaction: the main rate, concessional main duty, or a preferential rate allowed by a trade agreement. The selected rate will highlight in blue. Note the default will be the main rate for the destination country.
Some duties cannot be calculated through formulas. If this occurs, the duty rate appears as “SEE NOTE” with a box to input a dutiable amount. Select the applicable rate and click
Next
.

Additional/Retaliatory Duties

Some products may have additional or retaliatory duties attached to them. In these circumstances, an
Additional Duty
tab will appear showing the additional rate, as shown below.

Calculating Fees and Rates

Some duty and tax scenarios may limit the amount of fees or rates that can be applied to a calculation.
If you try to select more rates or fees than are needed for calculating purposes, an information message will appear at the top of the screen. You will not be able to move forward until the correct number of rate(s) is selected.

Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Duty

If an anti-dumping or countervailing duty is associated with a transaction, the
ADD/CVD
section will appear and display potential anti-dumping or countervailing duties. Determine whether any of the listed duties apply to the shipment. The selected duty will be highlighted in blue. When finished with the tab, click
Next
to proceed.

Other Country Specific Charges

Clicking
Next
moves to the
Other Country Specific Charges
step. Depending on the country, this may include:
  • Merchandise Processing Fees
  • Excise Tax
  • VAT
  • GST
  • Other Taxes
  • Additional Inputs
Select all charges that apply. The selected records will highlight in blue. Some countries publish charges directly mapped to the rate of the specific HS Number. Only the charge(s) that apply are shown.
However, other charges are at the country level and will appear grouped by product. When this occurs, navigate to the applicable record by clicking on the appropriate product type. After selecting any applicable charges, click
Next
. More than one charge can be selected.

Duty and Tax Analyzer: Calculation Results

Clicking
Next
opens the final calculation step:
Calculation Results
. The selections made in previous steps contribute to a duty and tax calculation. The calculated total from each step is shown beside the step name on the left navigation bar.
For duties and taxes calculated as a minimum or maximum of multiple formulas, all calculations are performed and compared automatically to choose the appropriate formula. If any changes need to be made, navigate back to prior steps by clicking
Previous
and make any necessary changes. The
Change Currency
box at the bottom of the screen allows you to change the currency, if applicable under that certain transaction.
Hovering over a question mark (next to estimated totals) shows the formula used in the calculation of that total. You can also change any information from the initial search screen by clicking the drop-down arrow on the gray header at the top of the screen.
