Search by Description (Advanced Search)

If no match is found in the
HS Quick Search Keywords
 descriptions, an
Advanced Search
 can be performed. This feature allows you to search through the descriptions of a tariff schedule for the specific HS Number that would apply to their product.
To start an Advanced Search, click
Advanced Search
 for in the HS Number/ Description drop-down.
After a Country/Tariff Schedule is selected and an HS Quick Search Keyword has been entered in the
HS Number/Description
 field, click
Show Advanced Options
. This opens a pop-up with a guided description search.
Clicking
Show Advanced Options
 allows you to review and change advanced search criteria. Default searches are performed on HS Numbers, HS Descriptions, Chapter Notes, Binding Rulings, and Keywords, including inflectional forms.
Example: The guided description search looks through all chapters of US HTS including the word “sock” somewhere in the pre-selected criteria.
If more than one chapter has HS Numbers with “sock” in the description, the screen will indicate the specific chapters and the number of fully qualified matches including the word “sock”. In this example, there are 713 references matching the search terms used in Chapter 61.
The HS Number, HS Description, Chapter Notes, Binding Rulings, and Keywords all have checkboxes within the
Description Search Types
 field. Choose which search types to use by checking the appropriate boxes.
Use the
Match Type
 drop-down to choose whether to match an entire phrase, all words, or any word(s) from the entered description.
The fully qualified HS Numbers matching the search criteria can be found by navigating through the chapters and headers in the grid below.
  1. First, choose a chapter to expand, then click > to the left of the
    Chapter
     column.
  2. Next, choose a heading to expand, then click > to the left of the
    Heading
     column. The fully qualified HS Numbers matching the search criteria within that chapter and heading can now be viewed.
If only one chapter has HS Numbers matching search terms, the guided description search starts with heading instead of chapter. Headings are displayed like chapters, where the screen indicates the number of fully qualified HS Number matches in the specified search.
Navigate through the tariff schedule descriptions until the correct fully qualified HS Number is identified. If a search term is found in a description, the word is highlighted in yellow.
To view an HS Number in the tariff schedule on the
Global Tariffs (Classic)
 screen, choose an HS Number in the
Advanced Search
 pop-up.
