Statistical Classifier
The
Statistical Classifier
feature is used for determining the HS classification of a product based on other similar products that have already been successfully classified within the user’s Global Classification database. To classify a product, open the Edit Classification
screen and select a product. Once a product is selected, click Statistical Classifier
.
Clicking
Statistical Classifier
will open the Statistical Classifier
pop-up, which shows however many fields the client company configured for utilization. Companies will want to choose the fields that are consistently the best predictors of tariff classification across their entire database, such as Product Description, Material Component, and Business Unit.In each field, data automatically populates from the existing classification record, but can be edited if desired.

If the
Customize Weights
box is checked, adjustable sliders will appear with the name of each of the above fields on the left. Sliders can be moved to the left or right to update the percentage of weight applied to certain classification aspects. When a slider is moved, the others move to the left or right proportionally in order to keep the total weights at 100%. After all weights are adjusted, click OK
to continue.
Once
OK
is clicked, the system looks at the various fields filled in from the existing product record (or edited by the user), as well as the weights given to each field, and determines the top five HS classifications this record may be associated with based on the other records in the system. The classifier will list these HS classifications in the order of most likely to least likely and give a percentage of likelihood next to each HS Number.

To the right of each number are the
Short Description
and Long Description
documented in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. For further information about a particular HS Number, click the HS Number
.
A second pop-up opens, linking to ONESOURCE Global Trade Content: where more information about the selected HS Number is stored. Information includes (but is not limited to):
- Duty Rates
- WCO Explanatory Notes
- Binding Rulings

If
Select
is clicked in the grid of likely HS Numbers returned, that HS Number will be populated to the open product’s record on the Edit Classification
screen.
important
The Statistical Classifier works by compiling statistical data from every record each night for each possible field determined by the company.
When the user attempts to classify a product, the classifier references statistical data compiled from the previous night to estimate the most likely HS Numbers for any given product.
Compiling the data each night prevents the system from referencing each field from every record any time a classification is needed. This greatly increases the speed of the classification process, allowing more products to be classified in less time.
