Date of publication by CBSA: August 01, 2024
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced significant amendments to the Departmental Consolidation of the Customs Tariff, set to take effect on September 1, 2024. The changes are encapsulated in the 2024-1 Tariff update, which introduces modifications to the descriptions and units of measure in several key chapters. The amendments impact Chapter 29, Chapter 71, Chapter 91, and Chapter 95 of the Customs Tariff. Among the most notable changes:
Chapter 29
: New descriptions have been added to distinguish vitamins imported specifically for use in the manufacture of food or beverages intended for human consumption.
Chapter 71 and Chapter 91
: These chapters now include revised descriptions to differentiate diamonds that are incorporated and weigh equal to or more than 0.5 carats.
Chapter 95
: The unit of measure for tariff classification number 9506.11.00.00 has been adjusted, moving towards a "Non-Applicable" status.
Importers with a tariff classification advance ruling should review the changes in Tariff Amendment T2024-1 to determine if the tariff classification number of the goods under their existing ruling is valid. Where the tariff classification of a good under a ruling letter is no longer valid, importers may submit a request to the CBSA office where the original ruling was issued for an affirmation of the ruling. Should the advance ruling no longer be valid, a modified ruling will be issued by the CBSA confirming the correct tariff classification number. These updates are part of CBSA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the Customs Tariff remains current and reflective of the latest market and regulatory trends. The CBSA encourages stakeholders to review the full 2024-1 Tariff for a comprehensive understanding of the amendments. All changes will be active in the Customs Commercial System (CCS) on September 1, 2024.Recognizing the importance of these changes for our clients, we have already made them available in ONESOURCE Global Trade Content (GTC) as of August 1, 2024.
