U.S. designates four Antifa-linked groups as global terrorists and foreign terrorist organizations

The U.S. Department of State has designated Antifa Ost, Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front, Armed Proletarian Justice, and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs), with an intent to further classify all four as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). These actions aim to disrupt the operations of these militant anarchist groups, which have conducted violent attacks across Europe, by cutting off their access to U.S. financial systems and resources.
Sanctions Overview
The designations target these groups under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and Executive Order 13224, blocking all property and interests in property of the designated entities that are in the United States or under the control of U.S. persons.
U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in transactions with them, and providing material support is a criminal offense. Secondary sanctions risks apply to foreign entities involved in significant transactions with these groups.
The measures specifically designate:
- Antifa Ost: A Germany-based militant group that targeted perceived "fascists" and "right-wing" individuals with attacks in Germany from 2018 to 2023, including a series of incidents in Budapest in February 2023. Hungary designated the group as a terrorist organization on September 26, 2025.
- Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front: An Italy-based anarchist network with affiliates in Europe, South America, and Asia, advocating armed struggle against nation-states and "Fortress Europe." Since 2003, it has claimed responsibility for bombings, letter bombs, and threats against political and economic targets, such as courthouses and capitalist institutions.
- Armed Proletarian Justice: A Greek anarchist and anti-capitalist group responsible for improvised explosive device (IED) attacks on government facilities, including a bomb planted near the Greek riot police headquarters in Goudi on December 18, 2023.
- Revolutionary Class Self-Defense: Another Greek anarchist and anti-capitalist group opposing "capitalist structures" and state repression, with claimed responsibility for IED attacks on the Greek Ministry of Labor (February 3, 2024) and Hellenic Train offices (April 11, 2025), linking actions to broader solidarity causes like Palestine.
