U.S. delays additional duties on certain Canadian imports

Date of publication: August 20, 2026.
On August 18, 2026, the White House issued a proclamation delaying the effective date of additional U.S. duties on certain imports from Canada related to disputes involving alcoholic beverages, dairy, and motor vehicles.
The duties, which had been scheduled to take effect on
August 19, 2026
, are now scheduled to take effect at
12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on August 22, 2026
. The three-day delay follows Canada's reported commitment to address the measures at issue and ongoing bilateral negotiations.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection has been directed to suspend collection of the additional duties as necessary to implement the delay. Where duties were collected and a refund is required, refunds will be processed under applicable law and CBP's standard procedures.
Importers with Canadian-origin shipments affected by the relevant tariff provisions should review entry timing, product classifications, and CBP implementation guidance. As the measure is a temporary postponement - not a cancellation - customers should continue preparing for potential duty exposure beginning August 22.
